In family therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) aims to help clients set behavioral goals, develop strategies based on learning theory to reach those objectives, and use social supports to help them succeed (Laidlaw, 2021). The goals of the assessment phase of CBT for Family Therapy are to highlight areas of strength and areas for improvement within the group or individual, to situate family and individual functioning within the framework of developmental stages, and to pinpoint areas of interaction between family members that can be addressed through behavioral, emotional, and cognitive means. Following the collection of sufficient data for the therapist to develop a treatment plan, a group meeting will take place to establish change priorities and go over the treatments that will be implemented. When one member of a family acts in a certain way, it often causes other members to follow suit. Pay close attention to the following during this therapy: the client’s problem-related behaviors, emotions, and thoughts; the client’s group’s actions toward the client; the family’s combined reactions toward the client; and the client’s relationship characteristics with family members (Bannink & Geschwind, 2021) During individual CBT, the emphasis is on the client’s experiences and the client’s reactions, emotions, and actions. Individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on processing, new behaviors, and both primary and secondary thinking. The objective of therapy is to help patients change the way they react to specific situations or stimuli.
A patient’s thought processes can be rewired using a variety of methods. Like reattribution, several of these can be utilized in group therapy. The original speaker of the video, a woman who had been raped at a frat party, takes “all or most of the blame” and blames herself in the video. After one of the girls finished telling her story, she turned to the other and said that the Frat boy was to blame, not her. Collaborating with the person in this way was fantastic. Despite her lack of reaction, she will eventually come to understand that the rape was not her fault if we keep using this kind of reinforcement. One potential problem with group CBT is that some participants may not react well when asked to share their story (Pirhekayaty, 2022). According to the original storyteller, she felt hurt every time she told her tale. To make this claim, she even cut off the therapist. Not everyone gets along with others because of how they handle emotions. This is why it’s crucial to conduct individual assessments before participating in groups.
