Write a 3-4 pp. typewritten, double-spaced paper in response to one of the following topics.
Book: Barbara Engel, Clifford Rosenthall, eds., Five Sisters: Women against the Tsar
Prompts: (please indicate on the first page of your submission which prompt you are addressing)
Prompt #1: What messages do the Five Sisters convey about why they became populist revolutionaries and about what they hoped to achieve? You’ll want to consider, if possible, what factors in their background that help account for the choices they made, as well as the experiences they had that led them to become revolutionaries.
Prompt #2: It can be argued that before the Five Sisters became revolutionaries, they were feminists, seeking rights and opportunities for themselves and other women. True or false? Discuss.
Because of the length of the paper, you need not discuss all five of the “sisters.” Two or three will suffice.

Grading criteria:
Your essay must be in the form of an argument, with a thesis statement (usually placed at the end of the introductory paragraph). The body of your paper (in which you are providing a proof for your thesis) should be organized in clearly written, focused paragraphs. A concluding paragraph will summarize your argument and restate your thesis. Include a bibliography. Where necessary, refer to the text and buttress your argument with the use of direct quotations. For correct citation form (only endnotes or footnotes are acceptable). This will be found in the History Paper Guidelines. Your paper will be graded on how well it responds to the essay question and on how effectively it is written (e.g., grammatically correct, organization, clarity of language, etc.).
Familiarity with text—the student must demonstrate that s/he knows the text well; this includes not leaving out any vital information that might change/contradict the thesis.
Defensible thesis. Theses that are too vague or simply not stated clearly or at all will be downgraded. Papers that get sidetracked and fail to consistently focus on the thesis, or contradict it, will also suffer.
Organization. Problems here include (a) first paragraph filler, where the student waffles and tells the story of the author, describes the details of the story, etc., instead of introducing the thesis and argument; and (b) organization which follows presentation of the storyline (or summarization of historical events) instead of the line of argument.
Evidence. Include citations (footnotes or endnotes only, as detailed above). Don’t summarize events unless absolutely necessary. Assume that your audience (me) has read the text(s). Proceed straight to the argument.
Grammar. This is not a grammar class. However, it is a truism that poor grammar has a negative impact on the effectiveness of writing, and hence on the essay as a whole (and, therefore, its grade). Avoid misspellings (especially of authors, characters, events, personages) and write in complete sentences. Papers that, for example, misspell “Chernyshevsky” will not receive a grade higher than A-, even if everything else is perfect. Watch out for tense shifts and number agreement between noun/pronoun and noun/verb. Proofread your papers!!!
