Within every story, there is a particular character that changes the entire storyline and contributes to the outcome of the plot. In plays, character placement and attributions are very important for helping the audience better understand and interpret the meaning throughout the play. The Chorus in Oedipus, Roderigo in Othello, Mrs. Linde in A Doll’s House, and Bono in Fences all help to establish the overall meaning of each of the plays.
In the play, Fences, the character Bono is Troy’s best friend. Between their relationship, he is the follower of the two. During the Friday night drinking session, Bono is usually the one just to sit around and listen to Troy talk. Bono appears to be the total opposite of Troy, although he admires Troy and all of his accomplishments. Bono admits that he has learned many things by following Troy for all those years in jail. He states, “I done learned a whole heap of things about life watching you. I done learned how to tell where the shit lies. How to tell it from the alfalfa”. This appears to be ironic because while Bono had been learning things from Troy, Troy should have been learning things from Bono. He serves the purpose of showing that there is hope for an individual no matter how hard things may get. Troy has found peace and happiness where he currently is. Bono was never worried about getting a promotion with the trash company because he was simply content with the situation he was in. It is clear that Bono loves his wife, even though she does not appear in the play. He is constantly counseling Troy which is exactly the kind of friend Troy needs. If Wilson had not put Bono in the play, then the norm would be men like Troy, who appears to be incapable of his own happiness. In the play, Bono states, “Some people build fences to keep people out, and other people build fences to keep people in”. Bono lets the audience recognize that individuals do have freedom and that many people can have hope that they will escape the “fence” that is stopping them from achieving their goals. Bono tried to steer Troy away from Alberta because he knows what is best for him, but towards the end of the play, Bono and Troy no longer hang out as much as they used to after Troy’s affair was announced. Bono’s character shows that there is happiness beyond just the boundaries one has set for themselves.
Without the chorus there would be no insight, without Roderigo there would be no demise for Iago, without Mrs.Linde there would be no guidance for Nora, and without Bono, there would be no encouragement for the audience. Each and every one of these characters, play such an important role within the plays. Each one impacts another life either for better or worse. Yet, each is so important in creating the storyline of each play.
