I have been a student at Mesa Community College for a semester, and over my English course and my other courses, I feel like I have developed and grown as a student. This English class taught me many key points I never thought I would possibly learn. Throughout this class, it has educated me on many criteria not only language or literature. I learned how to write and communicate to my audience, how to be independent, and how I found solutions to stuff I didn’t know about. But one of the most important things English taught me was how important writing and language are. Dr. Vassett, you taught me how powerful the written word and language can be and by knowing this now, I know that words tell much more than a story. Stories tell about the world and human experience which talk about the past, people, and cultures. On the other hand, literature educates the actual self as well as the self-related world. Through literature, I learned how we are all connected as human beings by going over how technology is being used in today’s generation. I learned how to write about what we think and/or what we believe in ourselves.

I remember before starting my course that I would always have problems with comprehending putting my thoughts on a paper and organizing them to make a point or even creating an essay according to the assignments given. The papers I wrote before attending this class were always boring and did not have a lot of examples to back up my point. Nevertheless, this class helped on enhancing this bad habit to write better papers. I feel I can write a paper now that supports my thesis and backs it up with examples as well as formatting and mentioning my sources.

I know that my ability and comprehension of writing and expressing ideas changed during the course of this semester. For example, before starting my English 102 class, I didn’t know much about how to write an interesting question, and I did not comprehend the difference between a “yes or no” question and a great question. Asking or writing a good question is when you ask the audience who, what, when, where, why, and how. Starting with these words will make it a significant question since it asks for a specific detailed answer. For example, throughout the class, I created many questions, of which some were not good enough to be excellent questions, but that is the point, I need to learn from where I started to where I ended. I first started my journal response with “Do you have any friends who are much older or younger than you? Is age important in a friendship?” I picked this example because this is a yes and no question, the wrong thing about it is that people will just answer yes or no without explaining it. On the other hand, this other example shows how I improved throughout my course “ ‘Face-to-face conversation leads to greater self-esteem and an improved ability to deal with others’ How does conversation help to have better self-esteem?” Picking a quote from the book, Reclaiming conversation: The power of talk in a digital age by Sherry Turkle made the question more interesting because it is based off of that quote. It is specific and goes right to the point where it can be discussed by others. I also learned a lot from the times my classmates were grouped and talked over the questions some of us had, which brings me to the next point.

When the time came and we had time to review each other’s questions was really helpful for me and for my peers. This showed me my improvements and my flaws because my classmates would respond to my question and some even told me how I could improve it. How sometimes I had it worded wrong or didn’t make any sense. Getting the support of other peers made me realize what I was doing wrong which will stay in my memory so I don’t come across these struggles again. The other thing that this activity helped with was not just English criteria but being more social. The 1-minute talk was hard but I managed to help others with their papers, which felt really good. The topics we discussed were educating and fun since we would socialize and hear what others were thinking and their personal perspectives learning how others made mistakes and getting that knowledge.

I did not gain a couple of things in this English semester such as the confidence of making a great thesis statement. I still lack that skill but I really hope my next English class will assist me with it. I am not going to lie but this English class was very challenging for me of the way I had essays to do and research evidence of what I was trying to write about. Overall, I know that I have improved so much on this part, the way I achieved this was by prioritizing this from other things and organizing it by making drafts, revising, and re-reading my thoughts/notes.
