Throughout the semester, I have provided various styles of summaries of many articles that have been assigned on the syllabus: PowerPoint presentations, video lectures, and bullet point outlines.
For the final reading selections of the semester, which features readings by bell hooks, Henry Giroux, and Matthew Mueleners, students are asked to provide their own summary of one of the articles. Select one of the three. Repeat: choose either hooks, Giroux, or Mueleners.
For your summary, you have three options.
A bullet point outline (see this for an example). Outlines in this format should be between 2 and 3 pages in length. Attach as a PDF or Word file.
A PowerPoint presentation (see this for an example). Presentations should be between 10 and 15 slides. Attach as Google Slides or PowerPoint (note: do not use Apple Keynote).
A video lecture (see this for an example). Video lectures should be between 3 and 5 minutes in length. If you choose the video option, submit a recording or URL.
Whether you choose an outline, presentation, or video, your goal is to do four things:
1. Concisely summarize the key points of the article/essay
2. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of how the author’s arguments or ideas fit together by using your own analogies and comparisons.
3. Offer any critiques that seem especially important to your own reading and interpretation of the article/essay.
4. Since this assignment comes near the end of the semester, you should draw connections to other articles we have read. Do not, however, spend any time discussing any films. Keep your focus strictly on the article you have selected, but put it in conversation with those we’ve read throughout the semester toward the end of your outline/presentation/video.
