This assignment will require you to compare and contrast how Functionalism, Conflict Theory, AND Symbolic Interactionism would analyze and interpret a short (up to 30 minutes) video/DVD of your choice.
For this assignment , you must write a 2-3 page (500-750 words) double-spaced analysis of a video. You need to:
Identify a video/DVD (from YouTube or elsewhere, like the Films on Demand database in the PCC Library)
Provide a short summary of the video/DVD (What is the video about? Clarity is important!)
In a separate paragraph for each theory, explain how you would use
at least three of the big ideas of Functionalist theory to explain your video
at least three of the big ideas of Conflict theory to explain your video
at least three of the big ideas of Symbolic Interactionist theory to explain your video
Thoroughly explain each one using the sociological concepts/terms that were important to these theorists. Write as much as possible you can.
Next, explain which one of the three paradigms (functionalist, conflict, or symbolic interactionist) best explains your video/DVD? Explain your reasoning.
Grading
Video Highlights: 4 points (Clarity is important)
Analysis using Durkheim, Marx, AND Goffman: 12 points (must be thorough)
Which paradigm best explains your video?: 4 Points (Explanation of selected paradigm: why did you select this particular paradigm as the one that best fits the video? How does your paradigm explain your video/DVD? Thoroughly explain).
SLO 1: 4 points. Scores for al four analyses (Durkheim, Marx, Goffman, and explains which of the paradigms best explains your video) will be averaged to create an overall Learning Mastery score for this outcome.
