This assignment allows you to demonstrate a comprehensive approach to working with toddlers and their families using a case study approach. You will observe a child between the ages of 13-23 months
Preparing for Observations: Prior to observing, you will want to review the course textbooks and other course resources and materials related to development.
Child Observations: You will make a minimum of three 90-minute observations of a toddler. During the observations, you will document the child’s learning in an objective manner, focusing on the development of the child. If necessary, you may talk with caregivers (teacher/family) about particular development not observed during the required observation time frame. You will complete the developmental worksheet for each observation. You may use one of the checklists provided under “Resources”.
For the first and second observations of the child, you will utilize a checklist to observe general development in ALL domains.
All domains include: cognitive and language, motor skills (fine and gross motor), and social-emotional
On the third observation, you will complete the appropriate Ages and Stages Questionnaire and the ASQ-Social Emotional for the toddler.
This requires that you send the child’s date of birth and the number of weeks the child was premature (if applicable) to the instructor in advance of the final observation.
Classroom Observation: You will observe the toddler’s classroom for a minimum of one hour. During that hour, you will not focus on the child but be attentive to the environment. You will complete the Toddler Classroom Observation Sheet.
Family Interview: You will interview the family of the child involved in the case study. The interview will focus on the family’s perspective and experience with teachers, centers, and their own child-rearing beliefs. This interview should include mention of culture and/or language beyond child-rearing beliefs. You are expected to demonstrate professionalism and respect when conducting this interview. You will write a summary of this interview in a 2-3-page paper, connecting the interview with a reflection on your personal beliefs and professional approach to connecting with families in a respectful, responsive manner.
Written Summary: Now that you have spent a minimum of three hours observing a toddler, their classroom, and interviewed both the family and teacher, you will develop a written summary of the child’s development, skills, and abilities as well as the caregivers (family and teacher) and the classroom environment. You will want to use all of your anecdotal notes and observations as well as your ASQs and interview data as you prepare to write this summary.
This summary must be between 3 and 5 pages in length.
Consider your audience for this summary to be early childhood professionals. Keep the tone professional with formal language. For example, avoid the use of the word kid/kids. Instead, use child/children.
Introduce the reader to the child. You will want to use a pseudonym (fake name) or the child’s initials to maintain confidentiality. Tell the reader the basics:
Age (in months)
Gender
If they receive any special services or have an IFSP
Briefly share what the child’s interests are or what activities they enjoy.
Give a sense of the family situation, including home language, family structure, etc. Think about Bronfenbrenner’s systems as you write about the family and their support systems as it surrounds the child.
Once you have given an overview of the whole child, you will summarize each domain of development. You will need to support your statements with examples from your observations.
Write about the classroom and how the classroom environment does/does not support the child’s development. What did you learn about the teacher’s approach to this child’s development? What about the teacher-child interactions that you observed?
Finally, you will write a reflection at the end of your summary. You will include your personal or professional reflection on what you learned about the child. You may wish to include:
Opportunities you noted in the classroom that will support this child’s learning and development. In your summary, you will describe how you would use what you learned about the child and how you would support this child’s development in the classroom.
An activity in the classroom that would have supported this child’s development. Describe the activity and how it will support the areas where the child’s development needs support. You need to identify three (3) activities from the classroom you observed that would support areas of atypical learning and development of the child you observed.
For example, if the child has weak fine motor skills, you should name 2-3 activities that were present in the child’s classroom that would support his/her fine motor development, such as the writing center, or puzzles, or lacing cards. If you did not observe an opportunity in the classroom, think of a way that the child could strengthen those skills. How might your observations affect your professional decisions about the child?
How your observations impacted your view of working with toddlers. Would you do the same things you saw in your observations, or would you do things differently?
How your past experiences with children come into play if you have had such experiences.
Activity Plan: You will create an individualized activity plan for the child based on observations. You will detail two (2) different activities based on this child’s development. These activities will identify objectives for learning from NC Foundations of Early Learning and Development for the targeted developmental area using the Developmental Indicators that are appropriate for this child’s development. You will need to provide evidence as to why you chose a particular goal/objective for the child. This part of the assignment is not a full-blown lesson plan but should include activities you develop that are targeted to support this child’s learning and development. You should use the associated Toddler Case Study Activity Plan.
The final submission should include:
A written summary for both the family interview and your 3-5 page paper about the child and classroom
Your observation notes. These will be any observational notes that you took during your observations of the child and of the classroom.
The Classroom Observation Sheet forms
The Toddler Case Study Activity Plan
