To deduce the relevance of journals as sources for theoretical and empirical research, a case study of various journals was done. The following were the findings.

Human Resource Development Quarterly

Jossey-Bass is the publisher of the Human Resource Development Quarterly. This publication is affiliated to the Academy of Human Resource Development. Based in America, the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) is a worldwide organization formed by the Human Resource Development (HRD) intellectual community of scholars and philosophical practitioners.

The Academy was created to promote efficient learning of human resource development theories, procedures, and practices to share information about HRD, to promote the appliance of HRD research discoveries and to offer chances for social relations among individuals with academic and professional curiosity in HRD from various disciplines. This journal has been in existence for twenty-one years now as it was first published in 1990. This scholarly journal is centered on the growing area of human resource development. It offers a direct guide to research on human resource development matters as well as a means for publicizing such research.

Human Resource Development Quarterly was the first academic journal in the field of human resource development. Its primary audience consists of practicing managers and academicians. This journal has had two-year impact factors: 3.747 ranked 12/140 in management and 7/101 in business while 6.206 ranked 7/140 in management and 6/101 in business (Science Direct, 2011).

Reflection

This exercise has been very insightful. First, it has come to my notice that most Journals are usually affiliated to societies or academic institutions. Such Journals are usually very reliable as these societies and institutions comprise of scholars, practitioners, and professionals in the field. I also realized that all of these journals had articles that provided theoretical, empirical and practical information in their relevant areas. To add to this, most of these journals were highly ranked.

In conclusion, all of the above journals are potential sources for relevant theoretical and empirical research as they were highly ranked in their respective areas and contained articles with theories, empirical findings, and practical applications.
