Personal Response
Overall Theatrical Experience (6 points)
The play itself: What do you believe the play was about and what the playwright was trying to communicate to the audience?
What was the genre of the play? (Tragic, comedic, tragicomic) Explain.
Theatre Space: What type of theatre was it, if in a theatre at all? How perceivably large or small? What sort of atmosphere did the theatre or film create?
The Actors (7 points)
Believability: Were the actors believable in the role they were playing? If they were, how did they seem to achieve this? If they were not, what occurred to weaken or ruin believability? (Make sure you separate the performer from the role – you can dislike a character but appreciate the way the actor portrayed him/her.)
What actors do you believe were the most successful in their role? Note what they did well.
If there were performers you did not like or believe to be successful, explain why you believe they were not. Give concrete examples.
C. The Director (7 points)
Did the pace of the production seem right? Did it drag in places or move swiftly? Did you find your mind wandering in particular scenes? Pick them out and explain what made you lose interest. Did one scene follow the other quickly, or were there long pauses or interruptions?
Do you believe the play was cast correctly? Were the actors appropriate for their roles?
Did all of the elements of the production (scenery, costumes, lighting, sound) seem to be unified and fit together seamlessly? Did it seem as if one person conceptualized and put everything together?
Design
D. Scenery (7.5 points)
What information could you gather from the set design about the time period, location, characters, and situation? How was this information communicated to you?
What was the overall atmosphere of the set? How did it make you feel?
Was the set realistic or non-realistic? Was it supposed to convey a recognizable place, or was it unrecognizable? How did that choice support the play?
E. Costumes (7.5 points)
What information could you gather from the costumes about the time period, place, character, and situation? How did you determine this?
What was the period of the costumes? Were they realistic or non-realistic?
Did each character’s costume seem appropriate to the character’s occupation, social status, personality, etc.? Why or why not?
F. Lighting (7.5 points)
What information was conveyed through the lighting about time, place, atmosphere?
Describe the mood of the lighting. How did it relate to the play?
Were the light changes slow or quick? How did this affect the feeling of the play?
G. Sound (7.5 points)
What information could you gather from the sounds of the play about time, place, atmosphere?
Was there music during the play? Did it tell you about what was going to happen next? Was it joyful, sorrowful, foreboding? How did it relate to the scene?
Were there any special effect sounds such as gunshots or a door closing? Were they executed properly, or was the sound too soon or too late?
