Abstract
Globalization has changed the way people think about the economy, which has occurred in three distinct phases throughout history. Globalization 1.0 occurred between 1492 and 1800, and Globalization 2.0 occurred between 1800 and 2000. People must be amidst a worldwide economic crisis regarding technological and economic developments. People will be able to work together and achieve universal prosperity when the world shrinks down to the size of a grain of sand in Globalization 3.0.
Summary of the Main Points
Friedman’s assessment of the causes driving business and competition in a technology-fueled global society is a call to action. He paints a picture of a world developing faster than most people can keep up with without resorting to scare tactics (Friedmann, 2005). Friedman’s video laid forth the United States’ economic issues in the fast-changing global economy. “The World is Flat” tackles everything from teleconferencing and podcasting to manufacturing and restaurant order processing to address an issue that most people cannot articulate (Platania & Saueressig, 2018). Success in a global economy requires knowledge and the ability to learn and invent independently.
Friedman is warning at the end of the discussion about how terrorist networks like Al-Qaeda may postpone or significantly harm Earth’s flattening. Media scare tactics and panic creation are a refreshing difference from a more objective and realistic approach to this issue. “The World is Flat” acts as a wake-up call for individuals who have become accustomed to working with people from all walks of life, including those with different religious or educational backgrounds or linguistic heritages.
I cannot entirely agree with the points made by Friedman in the video podcast since it analyses the core issues that relate to the various aspects of development in technology and globalization in countries with different levels of growth in a negative way. The video is on the prevalent issues with social existence and ethical issue concerns. The author analyzes the impacts and implications of rapid development and globalization in the context of employment.
I disagree with the assertations that jobs are not regional but outsourced. This step limits the development and application of knowledge and expertise. It discourages the growth and diversification of the study subjects and specialization in studies. Friedman talks of the adverse on sharing ideas at the international level since universities do not have exchange programs.
A Personal View on the Concepts
It is possible to outsource work to China, India, or any other Asian country to get lower-cost labor. Multinational corporations will go to any lengths to take advantage of low-cost labor and tax breaks. If the world was were genuinely flat, it is argued that all employees would be paid the same regardless of where they live (Friedman, 2021). “The World is Flat” asserts a narrowing of the gap between the rich and poor and that wealth should be more evenly distributed. On the other hand, Friedman sees a society where the chances for riches are evenly distributed, but the wealth itself is not distributed.
People born into poverty and starvation are not being treated on an equal basis with those born into wealth and power in the “The World is Flat” video. It is imperative to point out that as the Earth flattens and shrinks, there will be an increase in the number of essentially the same jobs. Each person would offer something new to the table. The most competent, diverse, and willing to negotiate for a lower salary will be the winners and the most likely to secure a position.
Social and Ethical Issues
The author overlooked the negative and good features of globalization and ignored the fact that the mechanisms of globalization concentrate money, labor, and, most importantly, health issues rather than distributing them. White-collar jobs, health and retirement benefits, and the exploitation of the poor in the third global world have all been affected by globalization (Shiyi, 2020). For decades, international corporations have benefited by stealing the job security of white-collar workers and the labor and resources of developing countries, and corporations are willing to sacrifice the middle class.
People’s personal and professional lives and those of their families and communities have been impacted by globalization. There is a lot of concern about the impact of globalization on people’s employment opportunities, earnings, and working conditions. Safety, culture, and identity are just examples of social factors that go beyond a person’s place of employment. However, social impact viewpoints and perceptions are widely divergent, as are the effects on the many sectors and economic and social participants’ objectives and capabilities. Some people believe that globalization worsens the problems of unemployment, inequality, and poverty, while others believe the opposite.
Ten Nuggets of Information from “The World is Flat”
America is still the most potent country globally, but other countries quickly catching up (Friedman, 2021). When it comes to economic and technological advancements, many will be able to surpass us.
Because of terrorist activities, the United States has begun to close its doors in a way that could make it less potent in the future.
As the rest of the world progresses, education is following suit. It is becoming increasingly common for students in mathematics and science to graduate in the critical fields of mathematics and science.
As more and more services are being outsourced, American workers are no longer in critical positions at the various levels of their organizations.
While at the top of the game, it can be difficult to remain creative. The United States of America is a goal for the rest of the world. It is more difficult for the United States of America to develop something worthwhile to strive for.
It is essential to have a goal in mind when you have dreams. To have memories, you have to think back to the past. If you let the recollections take precedence over the hopes and aspirations, the country will fall behind.
Without the best and brightest in their fields, people risk losing people who will carry us forward as world leaders. People are severing ties with the rest of the world, which is terrible.
With a more flattened world and the demise of traditional hierarchies, the little guy has a real opportunity to make an impact in this new world.
It is critical to realize that the Internet is the primary force responsible for the globalization phenomenon. People’s standard of living has improved due to globalization as a whole.
A flat world may not be possible for the United States indefinitely, but people should be ready to adapt to it if that is the case.
