Over the past years, American women have enjoyed and practiced the Roe v. Wade ruling that was made in 1973. The US Supreme Court made a landmark decision by coffering that the country’s constitution supports and grants the practice of abortion. Since then, several cases of pregnancy termination have occurred with the women choosing to undergo it at their will. However, despite the legalization of abortion in the country, some states limited the practice. Recently, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade a move that has sparked different issues including the impacts of the ruling on the economy.
In the US about 13 states had existing trigger laws and upon the ban, the regulation became effective after lifting the abortion protection (Coen-Sanchez et al., 2022). The territories include Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Alabama, American Samoa, Guam, Idaho, South Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Nebraska, West Virginia, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, South Carolina, Michigan, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, and Utah. In such regions, most companies who rely on labor provided by women may tend not to expand their business operations due to limited abortion care.
Even though the legal right to practice abortion is overturned, American women will still find ways to secure pregnancy termination. In order to achieve this, the majority will be forced to travel to the neighboring countries without restrictions to receive the services. For instance, females might opt to cross the border to access services in Mexico (Singh & Sedgh, 2022). With the increase in number of women seeking pregnancy termination in the country, Mexico will be able to generate high income from such services following the high demand from American women.
Following the overturning of the Roe v. Wade ruling, medical insurers will be faced with several legal issues. This means that each state will impose its own set of laws governing abortion coverage (Paltrow et al., 2022). Majority of the states will remove abortion care programs making the number of insured women to decline. The aspect will reduce the premium being paid to such organization leading to less profit. In general, the decision of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade will significantly impact the US economy, neighboring counties, and healthcare insurers.
