Introduction

History is very important in the modern world since it creates the basis of understanding our past and hence appreciating where we coming from. As such, by knowing our history, we can detect the progress and changes that have happened, and therefore we also stand a good chance to make necessary changes that would integrate positive changes for the better of the society. In this research paper, we shall review the history of the American education system which reflects the foundation of the education curriculum in the US today.

Discussion

In the history and events of American education, various major periods should be acknowledged, among them include, the common school movement, colonial period, and the early national period (Ganly, 2007). These three periods represent the evolution of the American education system. On the other hand, there are also two very important eras in the history of American education, namely; the progressive era and the modern era (Ganly, 2007); there were major developments in 1895 during the progressive period that generally led to the development of the modern era in 1964 which underwent numerous evolutions processes resulting to desegregation in our schools (Ganly, 2007).

Generally, all the events in the history of the American education system represent major development stages and each event is regarded for the different forms of adjustments it has contributed to making positive changes that have shaped today’s education systems in very diverse ways. To have a broad understanding of this topic, we shall review the modern era in trying to assess how it has significantly revolutionized the history in the education sector of America to what we have today in our classrooms (Ganly, 2007).

In the modernization stage of development, numerous factors have contributed to changes that have consequently brought the concept of social change. A good example is the drafting of the civil action in the year 1964 (Ganly, 2007). After implementing the Civil Rights Act in the American education system, there have been positive changes in the course of evolution that have had a considerable impact on education culture in America. This act is advantageous to both the government and the citizens of America as far as education is concerned. On the government side, there has been a development that has enabled the integration of the system of learning, while to the citizens, the acts have enabled those who were previously discriminated to have exclusive access to better education and therefore giving them a wonderful opportunity to better their future through schooling (Ganly, 2007). So, it can be argued that such developments in the modern era have brought and enabled the society to have equal opportunity to education and it is reflected in today’s society a factor that is positive since, at present, cases of discrimination in the classroom have reduced drastically in America.

Conclusion

As we have already seen, there are about three important periods in the history of American education. The modern era of education is a vital stage that has brought a lot of changes, especially after the implementation of the Civil Rights Acts in the middles of the 19th century causing positive mark in the evolution of American education that is still observable up to date in the society (Ganly, 2007).
