The goal of this assignment is to develop your skills in analyzing documentary films and understanding the different genres (or documentary types) that classify them. You will choose a documentary film from the provided list, watch it critically, and write a 500-750word report that examines the narrative elements and classifies the documentary based on its genre. You may refer to the Rabiger and Hermann reading and the class slides. Please be sure to use citations for the film, reading, and lectures.

Choose one documentary film from the provided list below*. Ensure that you have access to this documentary for viewing. All films are either accessible through your Northwestern Kanopy access, Netflix, or available through the NUQ Library in DVD or e-copy form.

Watch your selected documentary carefully, taking notes on key narrative elements, themes, and any significant aspects that stand out to you. Pay close attention to the film’s style and approach to storytelling. Are the filmmakers’ part of the film? Do they use first- or third-person narration? What effect does it have on the story? Who or what is this film about? Is the documentary subjective or objective and what does that tell us?

After viewing the documentary, classify it into one of the following documentary genres:

Expository
Observational
Poetic
Performative
Reflexive

Write a 500–750 word report introducing the documentary and its narrative elements. Analyze the key narrative elements of the documentary, such as plot, characters, setup, development, climax and resolution (Three-act documentary structure) Discuss how these elements contribute to the overall impact of the film. Explain why you classified the documentary into the chosen genre (e.g., participatory, observational, etc.). If there’s a hybridity in the genre explain that and with what genre it converges with. Provide specific examples from the film that support your classification.
