Introduction
Education in America has become one of the endangered ‘species’. The reason is that people are more interested in other matters that are of no relevance in education and neglected study. Children spend more time in front of the television than they do reading. In addition, sports have received more recognition than education across the continent. Entertainment seems the most important activity here. Cars are a must-have. Education in America is in trouble.
Body
Professional sports in American society have taken a front seat in the last couple of decades. Sporting activities and events are broadcasted on television and radio twenty-four hours a day. Sports have affected learning in a profound way. In the country, it is estimated that at least twenty-five million children between the age of six and eighteen years are active in school athletic programs or those of the community. For management, there are at least two and a half million coaches who spend at least eighty hours every season to train these youth. Participation in sporting activities has a positive effect on the youth. However, it takes the place of education in this society. It is an issue of controversy that sports are believed to be responsible for self-worth and a feeling of high self-esteem among the participants. Lyle Micheli supports sports arguing that it helps to develop social and interpersonal skills. He also says that it aids in physical health and psychological well-being. This put education at second priority as sports is believed to serve a better purpose (Caruba).
Millions of America’s population, both adults and children are so glued to the screen that they are best described as substance abusers. Television lures school children away from their school work. Most of the kids will either ignore their school work completely or leave it unfinished, spending most of the time in front of the television. There are many programs on television that are a distraction to children. Some of these have been rated as of bad influence o the health of American children. It is upon American parents to turn off the television or discourage their children from watching too much television as this is done at the expense of school performance and n the long learn a child’s future (Caruba).
Cars have become a basic need in America. Lack of one is seen as underdevelopment in American households. For this reason, banks are making loans available to all and sundry for the purpose of aiding every individual to acquire an automobile. Think of a new idea that will lead to the ultimate growth of the country. If you mention this and ask for participation in building on the idea and at the same time introduce the topic of cars, you may find yourself with an overflow of the audience for the car topic and none for your ideas. Cars are everyone’s passion. Even students are more interested in cars than they are in their education. A conference might be attended by the most important people for the best interest of the population. The cars they come in will however get more attention than the content of that conference.
Conclusion
America is in a race for technological advancement. At the moment, the idea of which model one will be purchasing next is more fascinating than what one can do to achieve a good future. Hence, a car will be the preoccupation of every individual even in the face of more urgent or important matters of growth. This includes the education of children. Education has been taken for granted at the advantage of the entertainment. It is not just adults who will be hooked to television, spending valuable time eating junk food at the risk of health problems. Most American kids are obese. This is the effect of being dominant, sitting, and eating.
