Introduction
Working ethics, from time to time, may be a very controversial and ambivalent issue. At-will employment is probably one of them: it suits ones and does not others. Despite that, at-will employment is neither beneficial for the employer nor the employee due to the absence of fundamental responsibilities from both sides.
Main body
The first topic to discuss is drawbacks in the hospital’s position. First and foremost, it is not fully clear whether the employee and employer had an agreement on at-will employment; this seems to be sudden and unspecified. Doyle (2021) claims that “most employers state clearly in their employee handbooks that employees are at-will”. Others can sign documents acknowledging at-will employment; however, it is inappropriate to adopt the policy and make decisions taking into account only Regional Hospital’s interests, overlooking workers’ needs.
Second of all, in general, such an approach to work can cause many inconveniences to both company and workers. For instance, Reddy (2018) states that it can involve a significant uncertainty in an employee, which can decrease work productivity, “employees have no way to better work culture”, and this type of employment can evoke many law controversies and make cooperation much harder. Thus, at-will employment has side effects that may be overlooked at first; however, be evident in the end.
Finally, at-will is wrong for the medical industry because hospital workers have considerable responsibilities, many human lives depend on them. If a worker feels that they can be fired any day without reason or can quit at any time, the feeling of responsibility shrinks, leading to human casualties. This industry has to provide its employees with assurance, safety, and cause-and-effect relation between their actions and consequences.
Conclusion
In conclusion, at-will employment is neither beneficial for the employer nor the employee due to the absence of fundamental responsibilities from both sides. Especially in the medical industry, workers have to feel safe and responsible, and be confident in their jobs. Mr. Fused suffered from Regional Hospital’s inappropriate and irresponsible actions; this case has to be acknowledged by the highest authorities.
