The article by Anjelia, Dahlia, and Asyrafunnisa (2021) aimed to identify and clarify depression in characters in Suzan Lori Park’s play screenplay “Topdog/Underdog.” The data source for this work was the script of the play, and the data were analyzed using a psychoanalytic approach and a descriptive qualitative research method. Reading, noting, and investigating processes were used to get the data. This work was written in order to analyze the article and compare the opinions of the authors with the writer.
Depressive disorders can be brought on by a variety of circumstances, including emotional conditions, material values, romantic relationships, and disputes. “Topdog/Underdog‟ contains 23 data on depressions that were divided into 32 parts” (Anjelia, Dahlia, and Asyrafunnisa 33). After analyzing this statement in the article, I am ready to agree with the authors on some points of the play analysis. The authors got to the conclusion that the competition between the two brothers was the primary source of the despair in this play (Anjelia, Dahlia, and Asyrafunnisa 41). The main character also experienced anger, a loss of desire, and aggression as a result of the development of depression.
The authors’ evidence demonstrated how the characters were aware of situations that may be problematic for them. The ego reacts to input by adapting to it or running away from it, controlling the action, seeking pleasure, and avoiding pain (Anjelia, Dahlia, and Asyrafunnisa 38). The authors discovered five Ego data as a consequence of the script (Anjelia, Dahlia, and Asyrafunnisa 40). According to the author, the ego pushes the main characters to do some sort of action to suppress their need for ID. Unfortunately, in my perspective, this component does not become relevant with only five pointers to the ego. To summarize, in this article, I found things with which I definitely agree, but there are points that are controversial for me.
