The 4th chapter of Genesis reveals the story of Cain and Abel. In addition to them, the chapter deals with such characters as Noah and his family, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca and Jacob’s wife. The stories of different families intersect and lead to a common line that comes down to the lives of Cain and Abel. The creation of Cain and Abel is noted as a blessing of God and an extension of His will upon the earth. The ability of humans to create life, in some ways similar to their own creator, is both a reflection of God’s image in man and a sign that God wants the newly emerging humanity to forge its own path ahead, using Him as guidance. Cain and Abel are important figures, as the conflict and subsequent murder of Abel is used to showcase the flawed nature of a person and make an argument for following God’s teachings. As told in Genesis 4:11, Cain is punished for killing his brother by having a curse placed on him – a mark of his separation from both the Lord and the rest of society. When Cain was expelled from his home, he built himself a new home and started offspring. There are certain similarities between the sin of Cain and the original sin because of their source. Similar to the actions of his parents, Cain’s jealous murder of his brother is shown to be directly responsible for the attitudes and actions of his sons and grandsons. Thus, Genesis shows and warns people that sinful actions do not disappear with the death of one person. They are passed on to his heirs and from them to their children, and so on constantly. In addition, this story serves as a foundation for how human civilization itself began, as the sons of Adam and Eve slowly populated the earth, built cities, and brought a start to many soon-to-be families, cities and nations.
