Step 2 of 5: Highlight what worked well in your proposal and what you could have improved.
Identify one or two strengths of the recommendations that you came up with. Identify what could have been better or needed improvement in your process of analyzing the problem or designing a solution, list what those improvements might be.
Step 3 of 5: Briefly walk us through your analysis process as a more experienced designer.
What are some questions about the needs, design, or outcomes that you’d ask now, as a more experienced designer, that you didn’t consider before? What assumptions can you make, and what conclusions would you draw here? Decide whether you have all the information you need or if there are more questions you’d ask (analysis of tasks, learner, environment, audience, type of learning, goals, objectives, targets, etc., etc.).
Step 4 of 5: Pitch at least one stronger design recommendation for this client. It could be a design that you’ve practiced in class that would be effective here or one you used on your midterm or final.
Over the semester, you’ve observed, sampled, and researched dozens of learning activities, techniques, tips, and tricks. You’ve practiced designing for different contexts, audiences, media, modalities, and more. What is at least one design solution from your mental “design toolkit” that you’ve explored this semester that you’d recommend that could address Sarah’s learning goal? Which theory or research finding in instructional design and ed tech explains why your design recommendation is likely an effective solution for Sarah? What do we know about the ways people learn (chunking information, designing for skill acquisition vs designing for knowledge) that support this stronger design recommendation that you are making?
Step 5 of 5: Engage in some reflection about where you started and where you are now.
How well did your “former self” do with this task? As a final reflection:
In what ways has your understanding of instructional design changed since you started the semester?
What resources would you recommend to help that novice designer think through requests and problems like these?
What are some of your favorite theories, design models, or approaches to instructional design that you’d recommend a novice designer review that might be helpful here?
