Introduction
The given case is an excellent illustration of an individual who is striving to achieve a goal for which he or she has no talents or predispositions. As a rehabilitation counselor, a professional is obliged to uphold a certain set of values and ethical principles in order to ensure that the patient’s interest is secured. There six main ethical principles, which are autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity, and veracity. Autonomy is a principle that fully considers a patient’s right to accept or refuse to undergo treatment procedures. It is one of the key concepts because no individual should be forced to act according to the healthcare professional’s recommendation. Nonmaleficence is another core principle that ensures that all medical specialists and psychology counselors adhere to possess a good and benign intention (Sewpaul & Henrickson, 2019). The latter concept is further supported by the principle of beneficence because it creates an environment where the patient feels secure due to the fact that the medical specialist always seeks overall improvement.
Main body
Furthermore, it is critical to point out the principle of justice because healthcare professionals should not favor one person over another. Every patient deserves equal treatment both in terms of medical and psychological care. The fidelity principle ensures that no medical specialist will betray the interests of patients in order to fulfill selfish goals. In addition, the principle of veracity is highly important due to the fact that any healthcare professional must uphold the truth above misinformation (Sewpaul & Henrickson, 2019). The main reason is that it eliminates misconduct and falsehood in medical practice. Thus, in the given case, the consumer deserves to choose if he/she wants to attend a four-year college in order to study mechanical engineering. The counselor is obliged to act in his/her interest with nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity, and veracity.
The primary dilemma is the fact that the consumer possesses a learning disorder in mathematics, which is a critical subject and skill for mechanical engineering. The potential issues can be manifested in his/her failure to keep up with study courses and the lack of necessary prerequisites to complete the college successfully. The essential ethical code is the fact that the counselor must follow both autonomy and beneficence principles. The applicable laws and regulations are the ones that provide assistance for students with learning disabilities or disorders. In order to give the most plausible consultation to the consumer, it is critical to understand that there a number of possible causes and consequences. For instance, the consumer can choose another major or career choice, which does not require extensive knowledge in mathematics. The examples are natural sciences, such as biology, medical specialties, or humanitarian fields, such as law and journalism.
Conclusion
All these professions and majors do not require substantial expertise in mathematics, which is an ideal solution for the consumer. However, if he/she wishes to be committed to his/her goal of becoming a rocket scientist, the consultation should include the discussion on the possible remedies of this choice. The consumer should be warned that the given specialty is highly competitive and requires a significant amount of knowledge and education. In addition, the possible causes of the given choice should be discussed, because it might be caused by alterable psychological and emotional factors. Thus, the best course of action for the consumer would be to explore other alternative career and major paths, which do not require in-depth mathematics. The new selected choice should also allow the consumer to use his/her strengths and positive qualities.
