Setting goals can be helpful for people of all professions and statuses. Remarkably, individuals who set goals and write them down are more likely to succeed than those who do not (“How to set goals,” 2016). This observation is likely related to the fact that people who write down their aims have a general understanding of what they want and a motivation. Unfortunately, setting the purpose does not automatically put the goal-setter at the finish line. Dedication is usually mentioned, but simple planning and putting milestones is no less critical. This paper aims to discuss the process of goal-setting regarding the long-term and short-term goals, and using the SMART or SMARTER technique.

So, as was mentioned, planning is an integral part of the goal-setting. To be more precise, when the goal is set, one can establish the milestones, which is especially good for the long-term goals (“A complete guide to goal setting,” 2018). The goal should be SMART, which stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relatable or relevant, time-bound, or having a target deadline (“How to set goals,” 2016). Some experts say that goal should be SMARTER, ER standing for ‘evaluate’ and ‘reward,’ which means that a setter should evaluate their success and celebrate it with rewards (“A complete guide to goal setting,” 2018). The SMART or SMARTER approach is suitable for short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals benefit from being specific and achievable, while long-time goals should be measurable, relatable, and time-based.

Thus, the process of goal setting was discussed through the prism of the SMART and SMARTER techniques. These tools are required if an individual has aspirations for achieving their purposes. Interestingly, the SMART and SMARTER tools determine the goals more directly, allowing the individual to constantly observe and reform the process of achievement. Therefore, it becomes easier not to be frightened by the aims but to see them as the resource.
