Each student will develop a brief literature review on a topic of interest to him/her and within the framework of the general class topic for each semester. Topics of interest will be developed by the class with the leadership of the professor. Efforts will be made to select topics that incorporate the applied dissertation topic of each student so that students can synergize their research for this course and their dissertation, however, students cannot use portions of their dissertation to fulfill this required assignment.
Literature Review: Students will find and read 9 to 12 relevant articles and write a brief integrated literature review. Articles will represent a cross-section of research methods from peer-reviewed journals and at least two of them should employ empirical research methods. Where appropriate, the review will describe the following: a) the sample used in the study; b) the variables (independent, dependent, and extraneous) in the study; c) the instruments or measurement tools used including their reliability and validity; d) the statistical analyses strategies employed, their appropriateness to the study and the significance of the results; and e) the strengths and weaknesses of the study.
Traditionally, reviews of the literature could be classified into one of two groups: thematic and study-by-study reviews. Thematic Reviews are those in which theme is identified and studies found under this theme are described. Major ideas and findings are reported rather than details. On the other hand, Study-by-study Reviews include a detailed summary of each study under a broad theme is provided. These are organized and flow coherently under various subheadings. Under either style, students must avoid string quotations (i.e., lengthy chunks of text directly quoted from a source). Students can write the assignment using one style or combining both approaches. The review should be between 10 and 13 pages in length and should observe APA form and style.
Preparation and Presentation (PowerPoint uploaded)
The second portion of this assignment will involve developing a Power Point presentation of approximately 10 slides in length which will summarize key findings of the review of the literature. This assignment will be uploaded as a separate assignment to the assignment box labeled “Seminar Presentation Upload”.
