Campus newspaper story

“The part of Saudi Arabia in Madrid” is the title of the article describing the recent event in the SLU in Madrid. Globalization is an important aspect of the modern world. It is inevitable in all types of communities. Although Saint Louis University in Madrid is not extremely large, there are students from different nationalities. The students from Saudi Arabia established the initiative by preparing the presentation of their culture.

The event took place on the university campus. The students did their best to engage as many other guests as possible. The first part of the event was the cooking of traditional cuisine. Together with others, Saudi Arabian students showed how to cook spicy lamb — the traditional meal. Then, the food was served on the large tray according to traditions. All participants were eating together in a circle, and it symbolized the significance of family relations in Saudi Arabia.

Students from Saudi Arabia were dressed in their traditional clothes — a white Thobe. After the meal, students taught their guests how to greet each other and thank them for something in their native language. More than two hundred million people speak Arabian around the world. It was interesting for SLU students to study something from this language. It was a fun and exciting experience for everyone. Speaking Arabian turned out to be a challenging task for others.

The familiarization with the Arabian music followed the language lessons. It should be noted, that students presented more of the modern Arabic repertoire rather than the old one. It has a historical ground. Saudi Arabians’ ancestors, Bedouins, had the nomadic way of life that did not allow them to carry excessive luggage such as musical instruments.

At the end of the event, all other students demonstrated only positive emotions. Besides, they thanked each other according to the rules of Arabian etiquette. These rules presuppose that shaking hands and kissing in cheek is acceptable only between representatives of the same gender. Finally, representatives from other minorities expressed the desire to establish the tradition of presenting various cultures.

The analysis of the story

The intended audience of my story is all students of Saint Louis University in Madrid who are interested in foreign traditions. The target audience prefers participation in such activities and learning something new. The representatives of the intended audience may ask the question about the reason for this event. I would answer that students from Saudi Arabia decided to contribute to the development of international relations between people by preparing the day of their culture.

Also, they aimed at achieving mutual respect among all students of the campus. The second question may be about the results of the event. Thus, I should answer that the occasion brought only positive emotions to participants as well as broadened the awareness of the foreign culture of Saudi Arabia. Finally, guests of the meeting received the necessary knowledge concerning the business etiquette in Saudi Arabia that can be useful in the future. For instance, they learned that alcohol and flowers were not commonly accepted in the country. This story could be accompanied by any other piece of writing about the traditions and cultural diversities throughout the world.
