Overall, the play Yellow written by Del Shores can be described as a tragicomedy since it incorporates humor and throws light on emotional suffering of the main characters. This performance was staged by New Conservatory Theatre Center on 5 March, 2014. In this work, the author attempts to show how secrecy, prejudice, and intolerance can ruin the life of a family and separate individuals. This is the main theme which is explored in this play.

One can say that the director was able to create a very realistic atmosphere. This goal was partly achieved with the help of scenery which resembled a real-life apartment. Furthermore, the stage was well-illuminated and the audience could see every element of the interior design. The sounds were diagetic; in other words, the origin of these sounds could be clearly identified by the audience. This approach made the play more realistic.

There are several details that can attract the attention of a viewer. First, the design of the scene that looks like a real interior of a house helps people place themselves in the position of the main characters. One should mention that stage designers use blue color lighting which eventually merges into yellow color.

This technique helps the author to show the progress of time. This is one of the approaches that can be distinguished. The selection of costumes helps the authors increase the home-life atmosphere of the play. Similarly, the sounds were quite clear, and they perfectly fitted the narrative.

This play can be praised for the actors’ performance. They were able to show how the emotional state of the main characters changed with time passing. They prompted the audience to imagine the life of the family depicted in the play. So, their performance was quite convincing. Moreover, they were able to work as a single ensemble. Every performer was able cope with his/her role.

I would like to distinguish the performance of an actress who played Gracie. For example, her voice reflects the changes in the emotions of the girl.

This actress is able to show how conceited her character is. Moreover, it is possible to mention the scene when Gracie imagines an interview with a CNN journalist. Overall, her performance was very authentic, and it made her the audience laugh. This is why this particular scene can be distinguished among others.

Much attention should be paid to the work of a director. For instance, the stage was comfortably balanced. The viewers, who were located in various parts of the room, could see the performance of actors. Overall, different elements of the stage design were consistent with one another. There was nothing that could distract the audience. Overall, the director Ed Decker managed to reflect the meaning of Del Shores’ play.

The performers authentically portrayed the inner world of this family. However, there are some details that seem confusing to me. In particular, I do not understand why Kendall’s mother is so opposed to his dream of becoming an actor. In my view, her attitude is not quite rational.

Overall, this play has produced a strong impression on me. I was fascinated with the ability of a director to combine humor and suspense. Additionally, this performance can prompt the audience to look through the eyes of the main characters. These are the main arguments that can be put forward.
