Critical thinking is so important in coding. Making sure the codes make sense and have meaning on what you are coding is so important in order to properly get reimbursed. Step one on the video suggested formulate question, in coding this is important as the code must give you a clear view of what the note, condition, identifying the diagnosis, medical tests, treatments or procedures were used, it must make sense an even offer a story of “why” this or that is coded. The codes must make sense.
Gather information: For example if in billing you do not understand why something was billed differently according to a chart or note, it is important to gather the proper information prior to sending any bill to either the insurance or patient, in order to avoid conflict with a patient or insurance company.
Apply information: once again this applies to how important it is to look up all information, whether in billing or coding, apply critical thinking to all subjects for instance, What is wrong with a patient, what was used to treat a patient in the doctors office, this goes to show how important clinical documentation is and chart reviews.
Critical thinking is use to apply to medical records, insurance review or policies, and most importantly billing and coding. In coding you must often have to breakdown a procedure or process in order to have effective and positive reimbursements for the facility.

It is always best to use critical thinking in all things in life. At least with important things. When it comes to coding and billing, it is more logical decisions and questions we need to make rather than the emotional side, You have to determine the cases of “how’s” or “what’s”. For example, How was the procedure done? What instruments were used? What is wrong with the patient? And so on. Not only that, but to understand what is is that you’re looking for and reading when it comes to that patient. You do that by reviewing their chart and understand while taking down notes of what you can gather. For example, diagnoses and procedures mentioned earlier. By using critical thinking it really helps you to understand and solve complex situations that will occur. Plus it’s a great lesson curve and expands your skills further. Problem solving with knowledgeable critical thinking is essential with coding and billing.
