Abortion is a common topic for debate, especially in lieu of such cases as the overturning of Roe v Wade. This can be perceived as a major step backward, as it endangers not only women’s bodily autonomy but their rights as well. In my opinion, the legalization of abortion is a necessity since every female has the right to decide what to do with her pregnancy. I will refer to three articles that reach similar conclusions to prove my point.
The first article is a study that reviews the correlation between restrictive abortion laws and maternal mortality. The writers gathered data from the UN and WHO, using a score of abortion law flexibility from 0 to 7 and a maternal mortality ratio (Latt et al. 5). Their results have demonstrated that by increasing the flexibility score, the MMR would decrease. Thus, in their conclusions, the authors state that reform may provide women with safe abortions.
The second article describes how criminalizing abortion may violate reflective choice and deny access to better care. To verify their viewpoint, the writers provided reasonable arguments for the decriminalization of abortion, such as safety, decreased stigma and social values (Goldbeck-Wood et al. 1). Moreover, they stated that the 1967 act is not supportive of reflective choice; hence, motivating reforms of the law and the measures that could be taken to improve the situation.
The third article discusses the ethical arguments for abortion in the Republic of Ireland. In order to validate their conclusion, the authors provided context and used various cases as examples. The text highlighted the story of Savita Halappanavar, who was forced to carry a pregnancy until her death on October 28th (McCarthy, et al 514). Aside from depicting the legal context of the attitude towards abortion in Ireland, the article also uses the church’s influence on the situation. Finally, the conclusion offers to repeal the eighth amendment and ensure that future abortion projects would be performed by the legislature.
The authors of the three articles support my viewpoint by depicting the health-related and ethical risks that may take place if abortion laws continue to be restrictive. Moreover, they provide data from various verified sources while examining the attitude surrounding the issue. Aside from that, the texts offer solutions that can be done in order to help protect women’s reproductive rights. Thus, the sources present themselves in a valid way, considering the context and underlying issues.
The writers’ conclusions can be considered substantial because their arguments are solid and do not rely on vague ideas that may be disproven. The examples and actions performed in the texts demonstrate thorough research and a proper understanding of the complications that may follow and the history behind the current attitude toward abortion. Besides these factors, the authors of the articles explain what may happen if the necessary actions are not taken. Thus, my rough draft will be strengthened due to the verified data in these texts and the hard work that was done to validate the views.
In conclusion, I support abortion and believe that banning it may endanger not only women’s health but their rights as well. To validate my point, I used three articles that depicted the legal, ethical and medical risks related to the restriction of abortion rights. The authors of the first article performed a study that has shown that restrictive laws increase risks of maternal mortality. The other two articles discuss how violating this right may not only complicate the legal aspect of the situation but endanger women’s laws as well. Due to the thorough review of the context, complications and problems surrounding the case, my draft will be strengthened and so is my viewpoint on the matter.
