More specifically, a child’s relationship with his/her parents may influence the way he/she chooses romantic relationships. In one longitudinal study, almost three quarters (72%) showed the same attachment styles as young adults that they had as infants. Many other studies show this similar pattern as well. This might be alarming when you think of the research that shows that 59% of adults are characterized as have a positive attachment style (i.e., securely attached), and 36% show more negative attachment styles (25% as avoidant or “dismissing and fearful” and 11% anxious/ambivalent or “preoccupied”). I guess this is fine if you are in a relationship with someone in the former category (i.e., securely attached), but what if you are in a relationship with someone in the latter category?
