The paper must:
· Be 1 page minimum or 2 pages maximum of content (do not include Works Cited page in the page count).
· Use at least 4 academic resources (e.g. journal article, government web sites, online newspaper, etc.) to support your position.
· Conform to MLA style when citing sources and composing your Works Cited page.
· Have a catchy title.
This 1–2 page research letter must be over a topic or issue that is relative to the course and material covered in class. You must tell me: 1) why the issue is important to you 2) how can you help your community (personal responsibility) 3) what can you do to help your community (social responsibility). The short writing assignment will require you to use this definition of personal responsibility and social responsibility:
Personal responsibility
· Understanding Ethical Choices – The student is able to thoroughly discuss at least two sides of an ethical choice to be made.
· Decision-Making – The student is able to state a position on the issue with more detailed explanation and/or reasons for the position and addresses objections to their position.
· Consequences – The student is able to identify consequences and demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the scope, complexity and/or magnitude of the consequence
Social responsibility
· Intercultural Competence – includes knowledge of one’s own culture and how it has shaped one’s world view, knowledge of significant characteristics of other cultures, the ability to compare and contrast different cultures and the ability to adjust one’s actions
to successfully interact with someone from another culture. Culture includes history, values, politics, economics, communication styles, beliefs and practices.
· Knowledge of Civic Responsibility and Engagement with Communities – includes active participation in the public life of a local, regional, national, and/or global community in an informed, committed, and constructive manner, with a focus on the common good. Our committee discussions included measuring knowledge and engagement separately, with the idea that a person can have vast knowledge of civic responsibility with no interest in engagement, or be very engaged without any knowledge.
To facilitate grading, the research letter must comply with the following guidelines:
· Papers must be completed as a Word document, using one-inch margins, double spaced, and size 12 font in Times Roman.
· Include page number and your last name in the top right-hand corner.
· Include the following, single-spaced, at the top left of the first page (before the paper title):
¨ Your name (i.e., John Doe)
¨ Class title (i.e., GOVT 2305)
¨ Name of Senator or Congressman/Congresswoman letter is addressed to.
¨ Due date
· In naming your file for submission, include the name of the assignment and your name. (For example, Research Letter – John Doe).
· Papers must be submitted through SafeAssign (to check for plagiarism) as attachments under the proper eCampus Submission Area by the date and time specified in the class schedule.
Papers deviating from these guidelines will be docked points. Writing this paper demands/requires careful thought, writing, and editing on your part. Strong arguments and carefully thought-out reasoning are what I am looking for. Rambling, pointless sentences will be penalized. Grammatical (subject verb disagreement, sentence fragments, etc.) and spelling errors will be docked points as well. Using a spell and grammar check will save you many points.
This paper provides an opportunity for you to take advantage of the excellent services provided by Dallas College’s Writing Lab. See the eCampus “Writing Resources” tab for links to this, and other resources, you may find helpful in writing your paper. The research letter will be used to assess your critical thinking skills, communication skills, and personal responsibility. I will assist students in selecting a topic. (Do NOT worry). I will also provide tips on how to create an argument.
I will grade the research letter based on the following criteria:
1- Your name
2- Name of Senator or Congressman/Congresswoman
3- Title
4- Format – one inch margin all around, Times New Roman 12-point font, and double spaced
5- At least 4 academic sources written in MLA format
6- Writing about your personal responsibility to your issue
7- Writing about your social responsibility to your issue
