Introduction

In the contemporary world, mental health is an area of great concern because of the number of individuals that require support and the complexity of the issue. The President’s New Freedom Commission report still affects the generally accepted attitude toward recovery of patients with certain conditions, such as different addictions, and disorders, despite being published almost twenty years ago. This essay will examine if the Recovery Movement raised from it still valid nowadays, based on its paradigm.

Discussion of the Recovery Movement’s Approach

Recovery Movement that is based on the recovery model, or, in other words, the recovery approach, is the guidance that outlines provisions of how to work with individuals with a diagnosis of a mental illness. The primary premises are that it is possible to recover from a mental health illness and that patient-directed recovery is the most effective one (SW Classes, 2016a). The other provisions that support the approach are that people shall make choices that support their well-being, they need a safe place for living, daily rooting is essential, and social relationships assist in recovering. However, the Recovery Movement is criticized, as its model tends to be claimed as an outdated one. The reason for it is that patient-directed recovery becomes a consumer-directed recovery because many services are offered and justified with attempting to help (SW Classes, 2016a); (SW Classes, 2016b). Simultaneously, it is more focused on the process and general methodology than on the desired outcomes and individualized approach (SW Classes, 2016a); (SW Classes, 2016b). Therefore, there is a need for this model to be significantly improved and adjusted.

Conclusion

It is possible to notice that many people have been helped with implementing the recovery model’s approach. However, nowadays, this approach was transformed and become a consumer-directed one, with emphasis on the comfort and convenience of the process through services offering, but not on the expected outcomes. Therefore, despite still being a valuable and primary attitude, the Recovery Movement needs to be improved to comply with contemporary realities and practices.
