Purpose:
The setting of SMART goals by the student enables the student to self d

Purpose:
The setting of SMART goals by the student enables the student to self direct the practicum experience towards the achievement of specific course competencies and translation of new knowledge into practice. Goal setting for the practicum experience moves the student from a passive state to being actively involved in the learning process.
Why set goals and what is a SMART goal?
A goal is a vision you work towards. By setting a SMART goal you ensure that you are pushing yourself to get the best results from the practicum experience, rather than relying on circumstance and waiting for things to happen.
Having goals makes you accountable. Rather than just talk, you are now obligated to act.
When you set goals, you connect yourself with your innermost desires. They help motivate you and give you something to strive for.
A goal tends to be general or broad and ambitious related to a specific desire by an individual, they also must be clear and realistic. Devise a goal that you have control over and it is not dependent upon anyone else to be achievable.
Smart Goals:
S – specific, significant, stretching
M – measurable – How will you measure the goal to determine success?
A – agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented
R – realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented
T – time-based, time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable
Example: By the end of September I will be able to deliver information in the SNAPPS format correctly.
Process:
In this assignment students will develop 3 SMART goals that are derived from the course competencies the student is expected to achieve by the end of the practicum rotation.
The written goals will illustrate the students interpretation of the competency category and what is meaningful to them.
The student will submit 3 goals prior to the case conference each month.
Student will share the 3 goals with their assigned preceptor.
The point category associated with  an outcome(s) as presented on the rubric are not calculated as part of the grade for this assignment even though you will see them associated with total points on the rubric.
These “points” correlate to level of competence/outcome achievement only and are not associated in any way with a grade
