Professor Initial Post: “We use data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Surve

Professor Initial Post: “We use data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) to document the medical spending of Americans aged 65 and older. We find that medical expenses more than double between ages 70 and 90.” Would a prevention approach benefit to decrease the rising cost?
Student response: A preventative approach would help decrease costs. Compared to the costs of 1.6 billion for secondary and 1.7 billion for cross-classified treatments, primary clinical preventive services are anticipated to yield a net savings of $7 billion (−0.4 percent of 2006 PHCE) (Yong et al., 2010). This can be done through many approaches. For example, it is important for the elderly to get regular checkups, screenings, and routine work. This can assist in identifying any health problems in their early stages, enabling prompt action, and halting the progression of illnesses. Along with that, promoting health education is another effective preventative method. It is important to spread awareness and for the elderly to understand how going for regular screenings can have a significant impact. These preventive actions not only help the elderly live longer and in better health, but they also reduce the financial strain on the healthcare system by preventing costly hospital stays and treatments that are frequently required for illnesses that can be avoided. Therefore, prevention methods are most definitely a very effective approach to help decrease the rising costs associated with healthcare. This approach should be given top priority since it not only lowers expenses but also plays a vital role in encouraging better lifestyles.
