Policies:
Please complete this assignment based on Sessions 4, 5, and 6(I will upload the slides for you), without consulting any individuals and without using ChatGPT or similar aids.
All items should be straightforward. However, if you happen to have any clarifying questions, please post them to Ed Discussion so that all students will have access to the answers when the teaching team responds. Please do NOT ask any questions in person or over email. The teaching team will avoid discussing the assignment in such private communications to ensure that all students have equal access to information.
Submissions:
Please download the Word file below and type your response in the designated space for each item. Please do NOT include your name, do NOT alter any formatting (e.g., margins, font, spacing), and do NOT exceed the page limit. The purpose is to ensure that the teaching team can focus solely on the content of your responses (e.g., rather than your identity or formatting). Please convert the document to a PDF file for submission.
Please plan to submit your assignment before the deadline, as the submission window will close promptly at that time. If you happen to experience any technical issue with the submission portal at the time of submission, please promptly email your assignment to all three Teaching Assistants (found in the “people” section of the Canvas page) so it is still submitted by the deadline.
Please direct all extension requests to AASL and in a timely manner. If you have a late submission with AASL approval, simply email your assignment and a copy of the AASL approval specifying the extended deadline to all three Teaching Assistants. If you have a late submission without such approval, you may still email your assignment to all three Teaching Assistants, with the understanding that a penalty will apply.
Scores:
This assignment consists of 3 items, each worth 10 points.
In this scoring system, all responses will start with a score of 0 and accumulate additional points up to a score of 10, i.e., low scores on this assignment do not indicate proportionally low performance but simply reflect the cumulative nature of the scoring.
Please keep in mind that failing to follow these instructions may constitute a violation of the academic integrity and honor codes and/or result in the loss of points.
ASSIGNMENT 2
please use attached response form
Item 1 (up to 2 pages):
Choose a concrete and specific real-world product that you believe is perceived more negatively than intended (e.g., a product that appears more expensive, lower-quality, smaller, heavier, etc. than it actually is), excluding examples discussed in class.
(1) Ideally, include a picture or a screenshot as evidence of this real-world product.
(2) Describe the product’s current perception (how you believe it is perceived) and desired perception (how you believe it should be perceived).
(3) Propose a strategy that can change the perception of this product in the desired direction, applying association, comparison, OR substitution, as discussed in Session 4 and (the first half of) Session 5.
(4) Explain how this strategy applies the chosen principle from association, comparison, OR substitution, as discussed in Session 4 and (the first half of) Session 5.
Item 2 (up to 2 pages):
Choose a concrete and specific real-world decision (e.g., decision between “subscribe and save” or “one-time purchase” on Amazon), excluding examples discussed in class.
(1) Ideally, include a picture or a screenshot as evidence of this real-world decision.
(2) Describe all options and which one you would like to encourage people to choose.
(3) Propose a strategy that can encourage people to choose that option, applying decoy, extremities, positive addition, OR negative addition, as discussed in Session 5. Your strategy should involve minimal costs. For example, it may involve some administrative costs that will ultimately benefit the company (e.g., the costs of adding a strictly dominated option or printing materials), but it should not include a $50 incentive for people to choose the desired option.
(4) Explain how this strategy applies the chosen principle from decoy, extremities, positive addition, OR negative addition, as discussed in Session 5.
Item 3 (up to 1 page):
One can infer that people exhibit present bias when they are presented with two choice pairs and their preferences are examined. Please respond to the following based on Session 6.
(1) Describe the two choice pairs.
(2) Describe people’s preference in each of the choice pairs.
(3) Explain what such preferences suggest.
(4) Illustrate how this phenomenon can be applied in a practical setting, referring to one of the examples discussed in class.
