Gravity is the force of attraction that pulls objects toward the center of Earth and holds the Moon in orbit around Earth. Galileo was interested in understanding gravity. He assumed all objects are subject to the same acceleration due to gravity. To test the idea, Galileo devised an experiment. He would drop objects from a tall tower to test his hypothesis. In this virtual lab activity, you will act as Galileo’s “assistant” as he drops objects from a tall building. The objective is to determine if objects with different masses fall at the same rate or varying rates in the presence of air and a vacuum.

When Galileo drops the big ball and the small ball at the same time, both balls hit the ground at virtually the same time. When the feather and the big ball are dropped at the same time, the big ball hits the ground first. When the small ball and the feather are dropped at the same time, the small ball hits the ground first. Under the vacuum, with air removed, the same items are tested again. No matter what objects are dropped inside the vacuum, both objects always hit the ground at the same time.
