The article by Larsson & Sahlsen (2016) introduces five characteristics that nurses feel make up a leader. The first category talks about demonstrating clinical knowledge which is something that is started at nursing school but is further expanded at the bedside (Larsson & Sahlsen, 2016). Nursing school taught the basics and theory of nursing but even with clinical experiences, it was vastly different from actual work experiences. There is so much to learn when you are working as a Registered Nurse compared to a student in school. The next category is to “establish of good atmosphere of collaboration”, and I find that I work well with my workers (Larsson & Sahlsen, 2016). There are so many moments of interaction and collaboration with the many members of the healthcare team and each member has a unique personality and perspective. It is difficult sometimes to accommodate everyone, but I find myself to be a quick learner on how to communicate with each person individually. Larsson & Sahlsen (2016) next talks about “consciously structuring the work in order to ensure patients best possible nursing care”, and this is demonstrated during delegation of patient bedside report hand off between shifts. The next category talks about “customized presence in the practical work with patients according to predetermined prerequisites”, and I feel this one is extremely important for a Registered Nurse (Larsson & Sahlsen, 2016). So many things can happen and change quickly that it is important to be able to respond appropriately to the situation. Finally, “monitor coworkers’ professional practice”, is the final category Larsson & Sahlsen (2016) mentions in the article. It is important to properly delegate what can be to the Nursing assistants that work closely with us. This is important since many Nurses find themselves understaffed and spread between multiple patients. This is a team effort and I want to ensure that my patients and coworkers are safe.
Looking back to the start of this course, I remember feeling extremely anxious about what was to come as a nurse leader. I’ve started to believe that I have many traits that could make me an excellent leader. To support the team, make sure everyone feels valued, reach goals, and collaborate in a single direction, nurse leaders must exhibit high levels of emotional intelligence (Lambert, 2021). My goal is to continue gaining new experience in this profession and become a successful leader. There was a lot to learn from this class in a short time. I feel that it was beneficial for my own growth as a Nurse.
