This article was very insightful on nursing leadership. The five categories it delved into were “Demonstrating clinical knowledge, establishing a good atmosphere of collaboration, consciously structuring the work in order to ensure patients’ best possible nursing care, customized presence in the practical work with patients according to predetermined prerequisites, and monitoring coworkers’ professional practice.” (Larsson & Sahlsten, 2016). I believe all of these are qualities a nurse leader should equip to strengthen their confidence and skills in nursing. I believe being a leader means having confidence and knowledge in what you are doing, which is what I said I wanted to learn how to achieve in my introduction post. This course has made me become more insightful on evidence-based practices, how to collaborate effectively with my team, and the best way to approach patient-centered care.
One of the categories that stuck out to me was “Consciously structuring the work in order to ensure patients’ best possible nursing care places”. For being a new nurse, I struggle a lot with time management and clustering care, and tend to spend a little more time focusing on minute things because I am often worried I might miss something. While taking your time and paying attention to detail is not a bad thing, I think learning how to cluster care to save time is of great importance. Being a nurse leader, you can save time by effectively communicating with your team to achieve what you need to get done quicker. For example, delegating tasks to the CNAs or reaching out to the doctor the second you have a concern with your patient. “Being an effective communicator requires excellent listening skills and the ability to clearly articulate and share clinical information, observations, and opinions.” (Larsson & Sahlsten, 2016).
I have also learned that being a nurse leader doesn’t just mean you are a know-it-all who gets everything done, you approach your patient care holistically and collaborate effectively with your team, while not being scared to take initiative when needed. “Leadership focused solely on task completion is insufficient to achieve optimum outcomes for the nursing workforce.” (Cummings et al., 2018). Overall, being a nurse leader takes confidence and skills which I am constantly developing each day.
