As a result of the increased popularity of social media, the younger generation faces constant peer pressure. When I scroll through social media, I see many models, what my friends are doing, advertisements, and so much more. It encourages me to try to look like those models and do what my friends are doing just to feel accepted. Social media influences our appearance, our outlook on ourselves, and even our actions. We can be influenced to follow friends and do the inappropriate things they post about doing, such as drinking or smoking, only to fit in and be accepted. This is toxic; maybe we don’t know it yet nor see it but our perspectives and self-image changes when being on social media due to peer pressure. I see myself desiring popularity and seeking acceptance.

However, but we can’t change who we are just to fit into society’s mold. Social media might be good for communication however posting and sharing creates a desire to become someone else and portray themselves differently.

Posting a picture of friends doing inappropriate stuff such as drinking and smoking can peer pressure people into thinking it’s okay and cool to do it. There were times when I’d see celebrities having drinks in their hands and it looked appealing to me. Things like this could easily influence younger kids to go out drinking. Celebrities have one of the biggest influences on those who are scrolling through social media because they begin to look up to them and in some cases desire to live like them. When a celebrity posts a picture of them partying and the picture looks good, some people would want to experience going to parties due to thinking that this is society’s mold. Noa Gafni Slaney’s position on social media is that there are multiple positive effects, she created an article titled “Online activism is having a positive effect on the real world”. She stated that “(2.2 million Twitter mentions and 2.4 million Facebook videos of people pouring buckets of ice water over themselves), it raised more than $115 million”. Slaney used this to argue that by the ice bucket challenge going viral and by people trying it raised $115 million and later was able to fund and research breakthroughs. However, this challenge influenced and peer pressured people to try it because everyone was doing it so people found the need to do it too. Even though this challenge was able to fund a research breakthrough, It peer-pressured the younger generation to do this challenge. This ice bucket challenge shows us how our actions are usually caused by the peer pressure of social media.

Peer pressure through social media can result in depression and disappointment. When you scroll through social media you see what everyone is up to, We try to become them, pretty or successful and this usually results in depression and disappointment. Emerson Csorba is a writer arguing about how digital connection is making people depressed and competitive. Emerson states “ By constantly seeing what others are doing, and in paying attention to their lives as they seem to be unfolding in real-time, our anxiety and uncertainty as to whether we are leading lives that fulfill our own potential deepens”(Csorba). I can look at social media and get peer pressured into thinking that I need to look prettier like those models are. Sometimes I get so deep into social media that I feel my self-esteem go down and I’m pressured to put my makeup on to look prettier. What Carson is saying is that when we get lost in social media, it could lead to depression. Others might argue that social media helps communicate and connects people globally, however, is it worth becoming depressed because you are unable to fit into social media standards? The younger generation is getting depressed due to them not being able to fit into the social media standard.

The younger generation is getting peer pressured into being someone else, due to social media. When I was in middle school I got very discouraged when I saw models and my friends’ interesting lives, I sought out a way to change my appearance. Over some time I noticed that I’ve been trying to look a certain way and be a certain way that wasn’t me. In 8th grade, I was scrolling through social media and saw friends and celebrities wearing makeup. After that, I went to go buy myself makeup to change my appearance. When I got home I put all this makeup on my face and finally thought I was pretty, social media has shaped my mind on what Beautiful meant. Social media is shaping our appearance and mindset in so many ways. We must change the message social media is sending to the younger generation. This happened to many of my friends and in the end, we realized how much social media is peer pressuring use. Social media is peer pressuring our appearance and the way we think about ourselves and we need to change this.

We need to change the way social media is shaping our emotions, and appearance and how it influences our actions. Since social media has grown in popularity more and more people get peer pressured by it. Social media has some good aspects but there are many negative effects on the younger generation. Social media is a scary place that can pressure us into being the people we aren’t and it makes us miserable knowing we can’t be like other people. Social media changes our emotions and our appearance. We have to watch out for what we post and comment on because the things we post could peer pressure, different people.
