Overview
What is a scholarly source?
A scholarly source is a published academic work based on research. In history, scholarly sources are produced by historians who carefully examine the available primary sources, as well as other secondary scholarly works, and provide their interpretation of events and issues in history based on their research. Scholarly sources include academic books, such as the course text, and articles from peer-reviewed journals such as the American Historical Review and the dozens of other historical journals that are available to students through the Shapiro Library.

Why use scholarly secondary sources?
Scholarly secondary sources can provide you with background information and offer analysis of the event or work by those removed one or more steps from the event or work itself. Scholarly articles are written by experts studying in a particular field, offering credibility to your research by providing interpretation of material by scholars. Secondary sources look beyond a particular event or artifact and can broaden your perspective and research. They can also provide historical perspective based on other events that have taken place since the original event or work.
Where can I find scholarly secondary sources?
The best available database for finding scholarly secondary sources in the field of history is JSTOR. You can locate articles in JSTOR through SNHU’s Shapiro Library. You can also select one of the scholarly secondary sources that have been provided as resources throughout the course.
Guidelines
These papers are not opinion papers and should not contain your opinion on the events, but rather a thorough analysis of the information that addresses the document’s context and purpose including any questions that remain unanswered by this document. For purposes of this activity, you should confine your resources and citations to the article and your course text. Incorporate citations and reference as appropriate to the topic you are discussing. However, you should not be using large “cut and paste” blocks of quotes simply to fill space. Your citations should have meaning.
Format
The scholarly secondary source analysis paper should follow these formatting guidelines: 1–2 pages, double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and citations in either Chicago or Turabian format.
Your paper should take the form of a coherent essay, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion, that addresses the following five questions. The table below the questions based on recommendations from the American Historical Association provides additional support to critically analyze your scholarly secondary source and write your essay.
What is the name of your chosen document?
Who was the author of this document, and why is he or she qualified to talk about this topic?
What historical event/topic is the author writing about, and what is his or her main argument?
List three things in the document that you think are important.
How do you think this source will contribute to your paper?
These below questions, based on the recommendations of the American Historical Association, provide a systematic way to analyze secondary sources.
