OVERVIEW
1. Managing Scope
In this assignment, you will step into the shoes of a project manager and work through various aspects of
project scope management. You will use the same project along with the Scope Statement, WBS and WBS
Dictionary you have developed in Assignment # 1.
This assignment is divided into six parts, each focusing on different elements of scope management. You will be
managing a fictional project you have chosen previously, and your task is to ensure that the project stays on
track and that scope changes are properly managed.
2. High-Level Requirements
Your assignment should include the following Parts:
Part 1: Scope Management Plan
• Draft a Scope Management Plan that outlines how you will define, validate, and control the
project scope for your chosen project.
• Use the form 2.3 Scope Management Plan from Book of Forms (BoF) to document your plan.
Part 2: Collect Requirements and Determining Acceptance Criteria
• Imagine you represent the three primary stakeholder groups for this project. Begin by identifying
and collecting the most important requirements for your project. This involves understanding
what the project stakeholders need and expect. These requirements must be measurable
(quantifiable) in order to be used as an appropriate acceptance criteria.
• Develop clear acceptance criteria for your project, which will be used to determine whether the
project has met its objectives.
• Use the form 2.5 Requirements Documentation from the BoF to document your requirements
and acceptance criteria.
Part 3: Scope Statement, WBS, WBS Dictionary
• Review the Scope Statement for your project, which should provide a detailed description of what
the project aims to achieve, updating as necessary.
• Review the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) that breaks down the project into smaller,
manageable components or tasks. Update the WBS as necessary.
• Review the WBS Dictionary that explains each element in your WBS in detail. This should
include descriptions, responsible parties, and any necessary resources. Update the WBS
Dictionary as necessary.
• Include these three components into your homework submission using the following BoF forms:
o 2.7 Scope Statement,
o Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) – Not in BoF
o 2.8 WBS Dictionary

Part 4: Validate Scope
• The acceptance criteria are input into the Product Acceptance Form to prepare for the process of
“Validate Scope”. In validate scope, the stakeholders will formally determine if you have met all
acceptance criteria. Transfer the information from 2.6 Requirements Documentation created in
Part 2 into the form 4.9 Product Acceptance Form from the BoF.
• Once your project is underway the project manager will validate the project scope and ensure
that deliverables meet the acceptance criteria that has been established.
• Use the form 4.9 Formal Acceptance Form from the BoF
Part 5: Control Scope
In the real world, changes to a project’s scope are common. In this part, you’ll practice manage changes
to scope effectively. Control Scope occurs during “Monitoring and Controlling”.
If there is a change suggested by a stakeholder that will significantly impact the scope and the change is
above the authorization of the project manager to approve, the change needs to get evaluated
extensively to see if the change is essential and the quantitative effects that this change may have on
the other constraints of the project.
Step 1: Pick a requirement that was originally excluded from your scope of work. Now imagine
that a key stakeholder has asked you to incorporate that requirement into your project. What
should you do? … Create a change request to add this requirement.
Step 2: Document the impact of the change on the rest of the project. After adding the required
change, describe how this change impacts the project timeline, budget, and other key aspects.
Use the 3.3 Change Request form to document this request.
Step 3: Approve the Change Request created in step 2. Make sure you explain that reasons for
approving, deferring or rejecting the change request.
Part 6: Questions & Answers
Create a section in your homework submission document and answer the following questions:
1. Why is the process “collect requirements” so important to process success?
2. What is progressive elaboration? Example, with an example from your project.
3. When the project is in execution, explain what is happening in your project.
4. While in monitoring and controlling, you may have to perform a scope change. What is a scope
change?
5. What is the difference between progressive elaboration and a change of scope (integrated
change control)
