Abstract: This section should be written after completion of the other sections of the lab report. It is a brief summary paragraph of the entire lab report. You will summarize each major section of the lab report. Should be no more than 250 words in length. Anywhere between 100-200 words is ideal. See guidelines in LabWrite®, linked on page 4 of this document. Introduction/Background: Write 1-2 paragraphs introducing the purpose of the experiment and what skill you learned through this experiment. Discuss the scientific concept and add the balanced chemical reaction equation (if applicable). Finish introduction with questions that this experiment will help answer. Chemicals and Equipment Used: List major chemicals and equipment used for the experiment. Procedure and Observations: In this section, you will write in paragraph form, describing what you did to complete the experiment in a detailed fashion. Use enough detail so that any person reading your lab report could go into the lab and reproduce the experiment. Please write in passive voice. (Ex: “The graduated cylinder was filled with 5.00 mL of solution” NOT “I filled the graduated cylinder with 5.00 mL of solution.”) Keep your procedure concise, no flowery words necessary. Just describe what you did and what observations you made (be conscious of color, smell, temperature.) These observations should have been recorded in your lab notebook for reference. Results (Data and Calculations): Data should be clearly displayed in a table, typed directly into the lab report. Headings of each column of a table will include units so the data should only be numerical in each column. Sample calculations should be shown. If handwritten in your lab notebook, include a reference to the corresponding pages. Any repeatable calculations only need to have one sample calculation shown. Discussion: Explain the significance of your findings. Did your findings meet the objective of the experiment? Were the questions from the introduction answered? What does your data conclude in regard to the scientific concept under study? How does your data compare to what is expected? Discuss at least three possible sources of error that could occur. How could the experiment be improved? Conclusion: 1-2 paragraph summary of what you learned from the lab experiment. Only in this section you are allowed to use “I”. Procedure Section This section should include a detailed descriiption of all the lab work you and your partner did in the experiment. DO NOT include results in the “Procedure” section. Rather, put those in the “Results and conclusions” section. Write your “Procedure” section in the past tense, passive voice. Write in statements, not commands. Incorrect: Fill a 100-mL beaker with 75 mL of tap water. Correct: A 100-mL beaker was filled with 75 mL of tap water. In the “Procedure” section, you only need to report things that could possibly affect the outcome of your experiment. Therefore, you do not need to write that you gathered up the needed materials before beginning, that you labeled your glassware, that you recorded your data and observations in your lab notebook, nor that you cleaned your glassware and disposed of any chemical waste after the experiment was finished.
