Vanishing Educational Traditions

Career aspects are being changed by influencers more frequently in these past few decades. Hands-on occupations are not as appreciated as they had been in previous eras. College degrees are more enforced by educational mentors than ever. Since higher educational ranks have been encouraged for young adults for so long, vocational and technological careers have decreased. These “dirty” jobs have a major impact on our society. The increase in College degrees has made it more difficult for those with a degree to get hired into the workforce right out of college. Most teachings today are over STEM-related courses instead of liberal arts. They provide young adults with the image that college is the only way to succeed in life. The articles “Why I Teach Plato To Plumbers” and “Dirty Jobs, Good Pay”, provide information on how educational traditions are vanishing.

In “Why I Teach Plato To Plumbers”, the author addresses the importance of studying liberal arts in every educational aspect. He addresses the fact that humanities have lost their way. Throughout this article, he argues that the loss of humanity is not just the problem. He thinks that not only humanities are disappearing, but liberal arts are also losing their value as well. The author believes the goal of education is based on economics and technological aspects. He also believes that math, science, and economics is the most important concept of liberal arts. Schools are starting to emphasize skills in STEM, rather than hands-on skills that do not require a degree. The author claims that “the problem facing humanities, in my view, isn’t just about humanities.” In his view, the main goal of education is founded on technological and economic advancement power.

The author confronts the deterioration of appreciation for blue-collar jobs in the article “Dirty Jobs, Good Pay.” Steven Malanga describes the importance of reviving the American work ethic throughout the article. People in this day and age are afraid to get their hands dirty, even when desperate for a job. Vocational training and technical training are being promoted because of the lack of people in these careers. Parents, educators, and mentors are teaching young adults that the only way to succeed is by going to college to get a degree. The author also talks about how the challenge also includes teaching traditional values. In early American times, educators promoted work ethics to mold students into “productive, hard-laboring adult citizens, and nineteenth-century schoolbooks embodied that spirit.” The shift of emphasis on work ethic in the 1950s changed to emphasizing college readiness. Today, many people with bachelor’s degrees struggle to find jobs. Those who have vocational and technological training, join the workforce after they receive their certifications.

Career aspects are being changed by influencers more and more in today’s world. Dirty work is not as appreciated as it used to be. College degrees are more enforced by educational mentors than ever. Since degrees have been pushed on young adults for so long, vocational and technological careers have decreased. These “dirty” jobs have a huge impact on our society. The increase in degrees has made it more difficult for those with a degree to get into the workforce after they graduate. Most teachings are over STEM-related courses instead of liberal arts.

Writer’s Memo

In this essay I used organization by cause and effect, paraphrasing to provide a concise summary, and used quotes to help emphasize the purpose of the article. First, I organized the summaries by revealing the impact on society today, and how the impact has affected the careers and people entering the workforce. The organization helped to keep a flow of ideas within the summary. I chose to organize my summaries this way to deeply portray the meaning and effectiveness of society’s image of success. I also included the concept of the articles in my summaries by describing the purpose of the author’s concerns about the issues being confronted. By doing this I could effectively present a clarification of why traditional teachings are vanishing, and what could happen if we don’t help solve this problem.

Paraphrasing was also a huge part of the writing of my essay. This method aided in a precise, straight-to-the-point summary. Paraphrasing was used to portray what the author was saying without copying word for word. It also helped me to contextualize and describe the problems being explained, the contributors to the problem at stake, and some ways these problems can be realistically solved in today’s society. This method encouraged the development of the understanding of the article, the purpose, and the concerns of the controversy.

The use of quotes helped to focus attention on the motives of the articles. The Quotes gave the summary a point of view straight from the author. They made it easier to prove a concise understanding of the problems being contextualized. The summary is more supported by contextual evidence because it portrays the apprehension of the author. Since both of the writers had similar problems, the quotes help to differentiate each scenario. The extracts from the articles gave summary support from the author’s point of view on the issue.
