Introduction
This essay analyzes issues that have affected Ruth Cummings; she works for Ken Hoffman as the manager of Saks Fifth Avenue store in the suburb of Denver. Ruth has been given an opportunity to work as the branch manager of the Company, but she has not been given a chance to perform her duties freely. Ken Hoffman controls her every move even though he claims to have great confidence in her work (Coles, 2010). Ruth is considering the option of resigning because of his demands.
Scope of the problem
When evaluating Ruth’s case, it is evident that her boss thinks that he trusts her and believes that she can do a great job in the expansion of his business (Bono; 2008). Ken Hoffman believes that Ruth is a good manager and the right person to develop and advance his store. On the other hand, Ruth is not comfortable and does not want her boss to follow her around. She is thinking of either reassigning or to continue working under Hoffman’s commands.
Major issue
The essay portrays that Ruth’s greatest aim is to control the Company and, as a result, provide her with finances to cover all her expenses and also improve the status of the store. Unfortunately, she is not free to do so because her boss disagrees with all her decisions; this makes her life as a manager insupportable and stressful. For-this-reason, she considers leaving the company because her boss does not give her an opportunity to show her ability.
Alternatives
People are always faced with decisions to make; all decisions have their positive and negative consequences, and so it is important to be alert whenever making important decisions. Ruth, for instance, has an option to continue working for her boss regardless of his demands and carry out her duties according to her understanding or simply resign from the Company. If she continues working for her boss, she will make him happy, and she will also rise to her supervisor‘s expectations (Bono, 2008). On the other hand, if she continues working for her boss in spite of his restrictions, she will never be contented with her work, and she will disregard her ambitions.
Carrying out her duties according to her ability will enable her to expand the company’s standards, thus making Hoffman happy because of executing her duties according to his expectations. This can also be a disadvantage for Ruth because her efforts can be less of what his boss expects and, as a result, end up sacking her. Resigning can be a better option because she will leave and maintain her self-respect and maybe get a better job where her opinion will be considered. However, her resignation can ruin the company, and she may end up regretting her decision.
Best Alternative
The best decision for Ruth is to work under her supervisor’s demands and find a way to raise her concerns so that he can improve her working conditions. If this is implemented, there is a possibility that Ruth will be in a position to uplift the company to the level that her boss expects (Coles, 2010). This is so because she will have done what is expected of her: she will be proud of herself, her boss will be happy, and the company will be in a better position.
Measuring the Success/Failure
Understanding the importance of following instructions is a major strategy when it comes to building morals and ethics that helps one understand that achieving success is not a simple task. This is so because whenever people make decisions, they should consider the consequences (Bono, 2008). This can be measured using various tools like theoretical testing that helps in acquiring accurate results.
Conclusion
This essay shows that the entire incident is about testing one’s values and the ability to resist one’s pride (Coles, 2010). Therefore, when you discover that someone wants to intimidate you, you should be in a position to do what is right so that they can be held responsible for their pretentious behavior.
