Look carefully at all the images. Spend some time with each one. At this point you need to move beyond the speed of “browsing” (something we do all the time in out digitally-mediated lives) to engage in “close looking” (something that requires us to slow down).
Take some notes about each image. Make sure you pay attention to the information about when and where the work of art was made. Click on the link below each image, which will lead you to the online source and sometimes to further information and more images by the same artist. For your notes, think of questions such as: What does the artwork make you think? What does it make you feel? What aspects of the image do you think are making you react in the way you do? How does it connect to other images in the collection or other images you have seen elsewhere? Why do you think this particular image could be considered important for Latin American art? Remember that your notes can also include new questions, not only answers.
Now do some exploring with the links from the last two pages of the pdf. The first slide of links has online exhibits and the second slide has links to a few museums from across Latin America that have Google Arts and Culture collections.
Once you have finished viewing and taking notes, do the following:
1. Choose one image from the pdf and use your notes to write a couple of paragraphs in which you analyze and reflect on every aspect of the image you can think of. Remember that it takes time to engage in “close looking.” If you feel like you are running out of ideas, go back and read the questions that I suggested for you to make notes on (“What does the artwork make you think? What does it make you feel? What aspects of the image do you think are making you react in the way you do? How does it connect to other images in the collection or other images you have seen elsewhere? Why do you think this particular image could be considered important for Latin American art?”)
2. Now go back to the collection and choose two or more images that have something interesting in common. What is it that they share? (it does not have to be subject-matter, it can be something as abstract as the effect they have on you when you look at them). Write about what it is that connects those images. Is your experience of the images in any way deeper when you think about them together as opposed to on their own.
Just answer the 2 questions as appropriate as possible, don’t worry about making notes.
