The greatest mathematician and scientist in classical antiquity was Archimedes of Syracuse. He was a polymath who contributed to several fields, including engineering, physics, astronomy, and mathematics. In addition, Archimedes was a gifted inventor and weapon designer. With an astronomer for a father, Archimedes had an early interest in science and started studying it. Historians deduced that Archimedes completed his education at the prestigious School of Alexandria from manuscripts describing his interactions with specific instructors (Everything about Archimedes, 2019). His ability to combine mathematics and physics—the ideal and the real—was another one of his distinctive strategies.

Archimedes established the formulae for spheres and other geometric objects’ volumes and surfaces. He pioneered using physics to solve mathematical issues, not the other way around.
