Improvement of critical thinking is currently a rather valuable learning objective in nursing. Nurses have to deal with cases that may require them to thoroughly analyze each case to ensure proper treatment. While ethics and decision-making is important, some medical situations have a firm time limit, which is why sometimes the latter may be completely irrelevant. The following text will review reciprocal questioning, IBL and CBL.
Reciprocal questioning is a technique where students create their own problems during a lesson. It improves the students’ comprehension skills of the acquired material, as they learn to obtain the necessary information (Editorial Staff, 2022). Another advantage is that it motivates involvement in the process. Their role is validated, which encourages them to study better. Finally, it encourages teamwork, as they cooperate to achieve the goals. However, it is time-consuming, which is not always suitable for nurses. Moreover, this method is misleading, as they may agree with a wrong response. Thus, this hinders the completion of the crucial objectives.
Inquiry-based learning motivates students to explore specific material or an issue. Due to its emphasis on the apprentices, they may be more interested in the lesson. This leads to the second and important advantage: improving teamwork (Gutierrez, 2018). They learn how to properly communicate and solve issues together. The third advantage is that it helps students preserve acquired information. They will be capable of later retrieving the same data. However, there are downsides to that method as well. It can be too stressful, as it requires quick thinking. The second disadvantage is that the teacher may not be suitably prepared. Finally, IBL can deteriorate test performance by ignoring valuable topics.
This leads to the third and most suitable method: case-based learning. It provides students with the necessary visual and written scenarios. Said scenarios are realistic, which demonstrate the characteristics of a patient. It helps apprentices observe one’s non-verbal means of communication. However, it can be too slow due to long-term contemplation (Rodriguez-Bailon et al, 2021). The demonstrated data can sometimes be too specific and inaccessible. Finally, some crucial details are hard to notice due to the required attention. Nonetheless, it is the best method, as it prepares students for real-life medical cases.
