Annotation

This paper is a desk-based literature review study that summarizes the findings of a range of research study papers and other similar paper on the subject of leadership development and its efficacy in organizations context. The aim of this paper is thus to review various theories of leadership development as well as discuss current findings on the same that have been advanced by recent research studies.

Throughout the paper, the author discusses in general what the leadership concept entails, how it is enhanced in work environments, sustained, cultivated and its applications in organizational settings. In summary what the author intends to do is strengthen the ability of organizations to nurture leadership talents by putting in place a workplace environment in which leadership development can thrive best. This is because leadership development in organization is regarded as one of the most important factor that empowers organization to succeed in a very competitive business environment.

Thus, this research paper is based on numerous literature review of similar studies which the author analyzes in an effort to develop sort of a framework that can be relied upon to enable organizations develop leadership culture among its personnel. Among the major findings of this paper by Amagoh (2009) is the fact that leadership development is an integral component for successful organizations that should be actively cultivated. Based on this observation, Amagoh (2009) proposes an “organizational commitment to leadership development programs, and an established framework that focuses on the sustainability components of the processes of organizational management and business practices”.

Indeed, Amagoh (2009) provides in this paper valuable insights that can be applied by organizations to enhance leadership development among its employees and how this can be aligned with long-term goals and vision of the organization. For this reason, Amagoh (2009) suggests that leadership development in organizations must incorporate both concepts of strategy and synergy. More specifically, the paper discusses in great depth the major structures that organizations needs to put in place in order to have a leadership program needed to bring about the desirable changes.

The paper also reviews several approaches that can effectively be utilized by organizations wishing to benefit from leadership such as integrated-solution approach, mentoring and experience-based approach among others (Amagoh, 2009). Because, this paper discusses in general all the various strategies of leadership development that can be pursued by organizations, its implications are therefore wide-reaching. This is because it enables the stakeholders interested in applying the recommendations of this study to be flexible enough since they can be able to choose from a range of interventions and approaches when implementing a leadership program based on their specific needs.

Personal Reflection

Generally this research paper by Amagoh (2009) provides a systematic review of the subject on leadership in context of contemporary organizations, as such in my opinion it is limited in several ways by the virtue of it being not a research study per se. Foremost, because this is sort of a desk-based literature review study it is likely that the author will be biased in selection of literature sources which have been used in this research paper to support specific theories which the author intends to advanced. The danger with this is that the author is likely to be selective and in the process fail to include other literature review studies that could be contravening the leadership models which he is discussing in the paper.

Because this bias doesn’t appear to have been controlled in this study, then it is safe to assume that this literature review on leadership theories is probably one-sided. Secondly, this paper is limited in terms of scope since it is too general and not detailed enough to offer any useful roadmap that can be applied in a specific organization in order to achieve the benefit of leadership discussed in the paper.

This is mainly because this study at best provides a framework that cannot be used without having to customize the findings of this study to relate to the specific need. Finally, because this paper provides an exploratory discussion of other study findings which we have no access to their methodologies and research designs which are necessary in judging the strength of the study, it means we have no way of telling if the proposed models of leadership can be effective if they were actually practically applied

Having said that, this study offers great insight on the subject of leadership in organization because it is able to systematically synthesize other research study findings which it helps summarize for our use. This way it helps one to save time having to read dozens of research studies on leadership development in organization in order to know current findings on the same. In addition, this study by the virtue of its design is able to highlight further areas where research is needed since it is an exploratory research paper that is desk-based.

So in conclusion, I think this paper will serve well as part of literature review on an actual research study that is aimed at investigating particular aspects of leadership development in organizations. More importantly, because it has achieved it mandate of providing a general framework that can be used by organizations to design an effective leadership program this paper offers a valuable tool that can be utilized by organizations to build model leadership program for their employees. I believe this will contribute to the overall organization success since empowering employee leadership capabilities will ultimately result to overall organizational success.
