DETAILS
Analyzing the Situation
Background informationRead the article, “Flooding, pollution more likely to occur in Houston minority communities”
Study Student Example of Project 1.
Part I: Email to Mayor of Houston for Planning and Administration
You are writing to the Mayor of Houston for Planning and Administration of the Mayor of Houston, John Whitmire, on behalf of residents of the Houston area in regards to the plans to stop the flooding and pollution to the vulnerable minority communities in the city. The article is short which only functions as a source of background information but feel free to use other sources that may enhance your argument to Mayor Whitmire. You will ask the mayor Whitmire to address two of the issues that the article addresses (you can decide on which areas you want to focus your email). You will write an email (using the proper format) to Mayor of Houston Whitmire (this is the appropriate way to address someone in this position) that advocates for two specific things that need to be addressed by the mayor’s office. You will include two reasons for both requests. Be sure to be persuasive and use current research/information to support your request.
Part II: Email to You (the concerned citizen)
You will switch roles and now write the response email from the point of view of Mayor of Houston Whitmire. In your response email, you will inform the concerned citizen (you) that their requests will be granted. You will give two reasons why this matter has not been addressed already, explain a timeline for these changes, and make a clear expression of the mayor’s office policies about minority concerns in the city and their plans to protect vulnerable minority communities from any natural disasters and pollution.
Specifics for a both emails:
Both emails should begin to/from/descriptive subject (see examples).
Use a polite and appropriate greeting: Dear Mayor of Houston Whitmire:
Do not double-space your text. Rather, “chunk” your text – this means that you use single spacing but double space between paragraphs.
Be consistent with the design: typefaces use, text size, color scheme.
PART I
Write 4 distinct paragraphs. Paragraph 1 introduces your requests and provides a framework for the reader. Who are you? What is your request?
Paragraph 2 deals with issue #1 and the two reasons why the mayor’s office should address the issue.
Paragraph 3 deals with issue #2 and the two reasons why the mayor’s office should address the issue.
Paragraph 4 concludes your email and requests feedback/response from the mayor’s office.
Use a polite “goodbye” like Best Regards or Warmly or Sincerely
Use a professional signature beneath your name
EXAMPLE:Dr. Shyam Pandey
Assistant Professor
PART II
Use a polite and appropriate greeting: Dear [Your Name]:
Write 4 distinct paragraphs. Paragraph 1 thanks the concerned citizen for his/her/their concern and responds.
Paragraph 2 gives two reasons why the mayor’s office has not already addressed these issues. It also confirms the mayor’s office commitment to environmental justice and maintaining urban spaces.
Paragraph 3 provides a timeline for these changes
Paragraph 4 concludes your email and thanks again.
Use a polite “goodbye” like Best Regards or Warmly or Sincerely
