Step 1. Review
Review the literature and HealthIT.gov website related to technology in the healthcare setting and the impact on quality and safety.
Step 2. Schedule
Schedule an interview with a nurse manager who uses health informatics in their daily work.
Step 3. Prepare
In the interview, collect information related to the following:
Identify new technology implemented in the last 3-5 years in the setting.
Identify the purpose of the new technology integration.
What specifically did the organization hope to accomplish with the implementation?
What data does the technology provide and how do these data impact care?
How does the nurse manager use the data from the technology (data analytics) to inform care?
Identify the impact the technology has made in the clinical setting related to quality and/or safety.
Has the technology served the purpose as originally planned? If so, how? If not, why not?
Glean information about the challenges of the new technology integration and security/privacy.
Ask about applicable legislation that relates to the technology integration and security/privacy technology points that were discussed in the interview.
Data and Decision Making: Aside from the example being discussed, what are some key reports/data that the nurse manager uses to inform care and decision making in his or her role? Be specific and share a brief overview in your written summary.
