In this assignment, you will gain knowledge of your chosen career field by conducting an informational interview. You will also explore Turnitin and Draft Coach, tools to help you develop your best original work when submitting assignments!
Get Ready for Your Interview
Last week’s discussion got you thinking about your ideal interview candidate(s). If you are struggling to find someone, please reach out to your professor, ask your peers in our InScribe community, check in Community Connect within CareerQuest or the UMUC/UMGC Alumni LinkedIn group.
Watch “How to Do an Informational Interview.”
Request a 20 minute interview with your candidate. Review this site for suggested wording.
Draft a list of questions in advance. Here are some questions you might consider:
What sparked your interest in this career field and what do you like most?
What does a typical day entail in your line of work?
What are some challenges you face in this career choice?
How do you handle your work-life balance?
What suggestions do you have for someone who is interested in this field?
Who else or what organizations do you recommend that I connect with?
Interview Time
Have fun! This is valuable time for you to make a connection. Be sure to gather background information, such as the interviewee’s education, professional experiences, for example. Ask your interviewee for this information if you cannot locate it in their professional profile.

Explore Turnitin and Draft Coach
Now that you have submitted your assignment, you are ready to explore a tool called Turnitin, a support for learning we use at UMGC. First, check out how this will work in your assignments by viewing the Myths & Truths video. Next, learn how to find and interpret a similarity report and how it’s helpful in this video.
Try it – Follow the guide in the video for the informational interview assignment you submitted and view your similarity report. What type of similarity has Turnitin highlighted? If you used the provided questions, those were probably highlighted, and that’s ok!
You may be thinking this is a great tool, but wondering what can you do before you submit your assignments. Watch how Draft Coach helps you address similarity, citation, and grammar issues before submitting your assignment with instant feedback!
Try it – Here is how you access Draft Coach at UMGC. Use this week’s informational interview or anything else you would like to practice using this tool. Get comfortable with the format and how Draft Coach can help you. You can use this at any time for any class to refine your documents before you submit the assignment!
