Instructions: Mental Health & Illness in Literature Part 1 Rationale: As a professional CYCP, the context of mental health work is prevalent in many settings. As part of interdisciplinary teams, the CYCP has a crucial role in understanding and articulating narratives to support and advocate for children and youth. The role of a CYCP begins with recognizing and understanding the impact of mental health and illness within an individuals life, how an individual experiences their mental illness, the challenges of the symptoms and diagnosis, and the impact of family members. Purpose: This assignment serves to contextualize the professional within the context of working with young people living with mental illness. The assignment creates a platform to do a deep dive into a memoir of an individual living with a mental illness so that the CYCP can critically and personally understand mental illness from a narrative perspective. By using creative means, you will summarize your book, connect it to the content/ material provided below and researched material, professionally critique the book and provide an insight into the personal impact it had on you and how you will conduct and cope with working with someone with this diagnosis moving into the CYCP field. Expectations/Steps: 1. Review the book list and choose a book that interests you – start reading your book right away!!! 2. Summarize the book – in your own words 3. Provide connections between the diagnosis and symptoms presented in the book and your research on that diagnosis – identify what relates to the course content and your research: diagnosis, symptoms, impact on self and others, treatment etc. 4. Provide a professional critique of the book 5. Explore the personal impact the book had on you and how you will work with individuals with this diagnosis moving into the field of CYCP 6. Conclusion 7. Choose a platform for submitting your assignment. This is open. You can choose from the following list: PowerPoint • Written paper • Blog post • Podcast • Storybook Ensure you still provide a reference page for the research you will use for your content Regardless of platform or format you choose, all assignments MUST include: 1. An Introduction: • Introduce the mental health memoir you have read, what platform you have chosen and why. • Provide introductory information about what you are focusing on in the submission. 2. Summary of the memoir • In your own words what was this book about? • Don’t go into full detail – you are not rewriting the book – you are simply highlighting the book, main individual, story, outcome, and conclusion 3. Connections between the diagnosis/symptoms and research/course content • Take notes throughout your reading so you can connect specific parts to your research • Include diagnosis, symptoms, impact of both on the individual and/or family, treatment, outcomes • Use the information that you make note of as you read to research the similarities and differences within your research and the course content • Do you research here – make strong connections between what research/course content/learning has shown you and the book 4. Professional critique of the book • Write a professional critique of this book – think of this as what you would say to a family and/or someone who just received this diagnosis • This critique IS different than the summary – it is a ‘critique/evaluation’ of the book; be professional, clear, and honest about your thoughts and opinions of the book 5. Personal impact of the book on you • How did this book impact you personally • Keep a journal throughout your reading of the book – or highlight/use post-its to capture passages/parts that resonated with you, or touched you in meaningful ways • How will this book impact you as a CYCP and your work with individuals with this diagnosis 6. Conclusion • Wrap up your submission • Summarize all the previous work – bring things to an end/closing Reading List ( choose one of the reading bellow) Armstrong, S. C. (2009).
