The term ‘women’s rights’ is the definition of promoting a position of legal and social equality of women with men. Women’s rights have been an ongoing controversial topic for many years.

Comparing women’s rights from the past to today’s practices really indicates how important it is for equal treatment to be implemented for both genders. Women may have had a major progression and development regarding their rights and their continuous fights for gender equality, however, in some countries the issue of fairness given to a female still currently stands. This clearly implies that the attention and awareness surrounding this issue is in fact lacking and would need further acknowledgement. In order to be educated and aware of the issue of the poor access women have to justice, we need to have a proper understanding of the past and the present situations on the subject of women’s rights. This could then open many doors and engage further improvements in recognizing both genders with equality and care.

Women have always been fighting for their rights. Some of the struggles they had to face and endure were; not being allowed to vote, having to submit to laws when they had no voice or option, having no property rights, and husbands had legal power over their wives, to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with allowance, divorce, and child custody laws favored men, most occupations were closed to women, when women did work they were paid only a fraction of what men earned, women were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law so women had no means to gain an education since no college or university would accept female students. Due to this physical and mental torture, women were and are constantly robbed of their self-confidence and self-respect. Society made women totally dependent on men. Imagine living day by day just to be constantly downgraded and thrown to the side just because of being a certain gender. Imagine being surrounded by unjust people with their unjust rulings and laws. Could you really blame the women who had hatred in their hearts, who turned bitter and cold, who wished they were six feet underground instead of having to live another day wondering what position they would be in tomorrow? What about the women who were sick of it all? Those women who had finally stood their ground and fought for change, change that had started a new beginning and a better future for them and their daughters.

The changes for women that have come about over generations, such as; family life, religion, government, employment, and in education, did not just happen spontaneously. Women themselves made these changes happen, very deliberately. Seven generations of women have come together to affect these changes in the most democratic ways: through meetings, petition drives, promoting, public speaking, and nonviolent resistance.  They have worked very hard to create a better world, and they have succeeded hugely. However, despite great improvements made by the international women’s rights movement over many years, women and girls around the world are still striving and struggling through harassment and abuse. Around the world, women are prevented from making deeply personal choices in their private lives. What we need to do is work toward the realization of women’s empowerment and having gender equality that everyone deserves, all while protecting the rights and improving the lives of women and girls.

In order for improvement to be made, we as a society need to implement awareness and demonstration through respect, kindness, and equality towards both genders. Some may argue that it’s no place for a woman to have a say or opinion, rather let her do the role she was made for. I do agree that there are certain aspects and differences between a woman and a man in every way.

However, what’s wrong is disrespecting, downgrading, and underestimating someone due to their ‘femininity’. Why does it seem like such a threat for a woman to have a status that may possibly be higher than a man’s? pride is what corrupts this world, and people are so blinded by it to notice the destruction it has made. Women and men complement each other, grow together, and love together and without one another they could not create generations.

While the world has achieved progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment women continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, thriving, and sustainable world. Providing equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will benefit societies and humanity. Implementing new legal frameworks regarding female equality is crucial to ending gender-based discrimination in many countries around the world. Women’s rights are simply human rights. Who are you to decide otherwise?
