In this essay, you will narrate your research process as you work to uncover the answer to the central question, “What do professionals in my field care, research, and write about?” [If you already have a general sense of the answer to that question, you can work with your instructor to craft a more specific inquiry based on your prior knowledge.] You will take up a process like Ken Macrorie describes in his book, I-Search: posing your research question, identifying meaningful primary sources (people or texts) that can help you uncover answers, narrating your exploration of those sources, and analyzing what you find.
Intro: You will begin drafting your essay before you even begin your research. In your introduction, you will
identify the discipline, professional field, or career you are focusing on,
establish your experience in and knowledge about your field, and
provide context for how you will approach discovering answers to the project’s central question. After you have conducted your research, you will return to revise your introduction to include a one-sentence thesis in which you articulate the field’s central concerns.
Research: To discover the answer(s) to this question, you will take up primary research methods. This can include:
Analyzing websites from departments and/or professional organizations
Talk with or interview professionals in your field,
Read about professionals in your field (via their own websites/pages) to observe their work,
Gather course documents (e.g. syllabi, writing guides, assignment prompts)
Observing professional interactions in classes, at locations of work, at events, and/or on public message boards, listservs, social media, etc.
We will practice these methods together in class before you try them for your specific research journey. You will identify at least three primary research encounters to work through for this project.
Narrative: In the body of your essay, you will narrate and describe your experiences engaging with people and texts, creating for your readers the scenes, or mini-stories in which you are conducting your research. Once you have established your research scene, provide information about questions like, what inquiries, topics, or concerns are pursued in this field? How do you know these are the topics that matter? How do professionals engage with or research these topics? How do they present their work to others (colleagues or the public)? You will provide detailed descriptions of what you learn from these people and texts, and you will analyze how these research encounters help you answer the project’s central question.
Conclusion: In your conclusion, you will summarize and reflect on your findings, explaining how your research encounters helped you understand the answer(s) to the project’s central question. Then, based on the knowledge you have discovered, you will present 2-3 potential research questions you want to explore in your own research for the semester.
Citations: Both in the text of your essay and in a references or works cited page, you will cite the sources you use for this project according to the conventions of your discipline (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).
Rubric:
Completion/Incompletion of this project will be based on whether and how you:
Write an introduction in which you
a) identify the discipline, professional field, or career you are focusing on,
b) establish your experience in and knowledge about your field, c) provide context for how you will approach discovering answers to the project’s central question, and
d) articulate a one-sentence thesis answering the project’s central question.
Engage with at least three primary sources (people or texts).
Write first-person narrative and descriptive paragraphs that provide context for the scenes in which you are conducting your research and information about the knowledge you identify from those research encounters.
Write a conclusion in which you summarize and reflect on your findings and articulate 2-3 potential research questions for the semester.
Cite your sources, both throughout the project and in a works cited or references section, using the citation conventions appropriate to your field (i.e., MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.)
Design and format your project for accessibility. Use section (H1) and (if necessary) subsection (H2) headers to organize your content.
Revise and edit your writing, preparing a clear final draft (1200-1500 words) for submission.
Reflect on your research and writing process and learning and compose your post-project reflective memo following the guidelines for that task. Submit your memo to Canvas along with your final version of your project.
